I don't want the expense of an FX camera. I'm not a professional. I also want to use my DX lenses. My budget depends on the camera and it's usefulness.

Thank you. I will take a look at the D500.

If you have a good lens collection you might want to consider a D500.

I don't know about the mirrorless. I need to read up on them. I'm open to any suggestions. I have a lot of DX lenses that I would like to keep using.

I have an old Nikon D5100 camera and I love it but I would like a new Nikon DX. Any suggestions.

I hand-hold ALL of my field macro-photography. Normally, my speedlight is set to 1/8 to 1/4-power. This equates to speedlight output of 1/1000-sec to 1/2000-sec, which will freeze any subject or camera movement. At ISO 200, my normal camera settings are 1/200-sec at f/16.
Well so much for the tripod. I'm doing hand held from now on. Thanks for all the info. I will keep working on this.

not bad, pretty rare when we all DON'T use flash, and rare when we use a tripod too. hand held (practice practice practice)is the way to increase your keeper rate as well
I'm more comfortable with hand held. I just think I need to use the tripod for sharpness but I really do better without it. Thanks

Cool. Love the shadow. The posture of these critters always makes me smile.
Thanks LRF, I liked the shadow too. The morning light was perfect, but I still have to use a speedlight and diffuser in this kind of light.

Interesting subject. Well done. Especially image #1. Please post a photo of your macro set-up.
Thanks Douglass. The first image was actually the last one I took and I went to f/16, which is much better. I did forget to turn off the VR on the lens. I need a little check list. I will post my set-up soon.

My first Preying Mantis nymph of the season, in the California Foothills. Found it in a wine barrow planter, early morning, scooting around on a piece of garden art. Love these little creatures.
Used a Nikon D5100 and a 105mm macro lens. I also used a speedlight and diffuser... and a tripod... until I got stuck between the planter and the porch and couldn't move. Then I had to remove the camera from the tripod. This little guy just wouldn't sit still.

A dragonfly devouring a damselfly. Isn't that paramount to cannibalism?
No Doug. It's more like killing your cousin.

OH, that second one does it for me. Really in your face good. The fifth image is beautiful as well.

I'm curious about how you write the date for your image folders, if you use that system. There seem to be two popular methods, with and without dashes.

For example, today's date could be 2015-04-13 (or underscores_) or 20150413.

I use the dashes. How about the rest of you?

I always use dashes but when I do this they are not there when they reach a file. I put 4-13-15 and when I go to the file it becomes 41315. I don't know why. Same with 4/13/15. My files are in Windows. I have given up trying to figure this out.
I also use a subject and tags. Usually put the date at the end.
