These birds were all shot using the Canon 100-400. I shoot my birds in shutter priority (TV) mode with my shutter speed usually set on at least 400. Since I'm shooting mainly out a window, I set my ISO on at least 1,000 depending on the light outside the window. Any resulting noise is eliminated using Topaz DeNoise.

Love your pictures. I would like to try your high ISO method in the next few days. Hope I can come close to your results.

Welcome and lovely pictures! Can't wait to see some more. I just upgraded my camera, have ordered two books but will look into the one mentioned as well.
Debbie

Thank you, Debbie. I ordered the book mentioned plus another on shutter speed also by Peterson. Hoping to learn from the books and UHH members.

Hello, everone! I have been shooting for years on mostly point and shoot cameras. I have an old 35mm SLR I used for a while then switched to digital point & shoot. Last month I upgraded to my first DSLR - Canon EOS Rebel T3i and hope I can master manual exposures. Looking forward to receiving advice from UHH members.
I joined yesterday and posted my first DSLR photos without inroducing myself. The 3 pics with this intro were taken with my digital point and shoot Olympus SP-800UZ.

Hi Rebel Rouser: Welcome to the forum. One of the best books I've come across to help you understand the various manual settings those being aperture, shutter speed and ISO and how they interact is "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. I'm very slowly working my way through the book. There is also a segment on metering for a starting exposure. Unfortunately there is no magic trick for learning exposure, Oh you can photoshop any picture to change the results from decent to better but it's more important to learn, how knowing the effects of exposure setting can make an ordinary shot really stand out from the snap shot most of us amatures take. By the way the photos you posted show you already have an eye for seeing what it is you are trying to capture.

Thanks for the input, I'll check out that book. All of my photo experience has been done by eye. I worked for a camera shop a few years ago developing and printing film. I would review and adjust the color on those that needed it before printing. I judged the color all by eye with just a little understanding of color adjustment.

Happy, healthy new year! I look forward to every day and what it brings.
Married my high school sweetheart many moons ago. I enjoy capturing family pics and still pics that share a lot of information without words. Having more hobbies than time and always multitasking I look forward to Ugly Hedgehog!

I just joined UHH today. I really love the composition of your first photo. The second is very good also.

Love the texture and water drops of the cabbage. I have had a T3i for just over a month now. Like it a lot, but need better lens.

I've had my camera for a month now, started shooting 12/01. The water drops are frozen raindrops It rained and then turned cold. Thanks for the review, I'm still a novice.

Great shots even the gum balls. We had a few of them trees and took them down finally, there was enough other trees to fill in the space.

We had a huge one close to the house, and I learned how to hate them in a hurry, so we had it removed. We have a wooded lot and we still have few around.

Great shots, I hate Sweetgum balls as they are much too numerous in the back yard.

What kind of camera did you get?

I have a Canon Rebel T3i; I hate the gumballs too, but took their picture anyway.
