I am in MD and can make the transaction via our paypal account provided you are willing to sell the lens for $900.
Key is if this lens clearly outperforms my 18-200 mm silver zoom on my A 6000 and the recently introduced 24-240 mm?
Let me know your comments please in a PM.
If you want to share your phone# I can call you so we can discuss this.
Thanks Fred.

Hi there, having read various replies to members questions re. dx and fx cameras. my question is does one need the 2 formats to cover every eventuality. Thanks in antisipation. Terry.

The latest FF cameras ( e.g D 600 ) can also be used in crop mode ( DX) , so you have the best of both worlds . The pixel reduction is not an issue as you start with 24MP.

Thanks for your reply Fred. I am glad to hear that you are sticking with the A65, at least for now. I like mine too.
Even at $1500 this lens is beyond my budget. Am considering a Sigma 100-400, though am hesitant, as these are close to $900 at the moment. Would you suggest I wait until I can afford a 'G' lens like yours? I am currently interested in 'birding' too, but its way hard using my Minolta Maxxum 135mm and getting close enough. (don't like the kit lens much 55-200 sony)

Take care,
Mick :)
Thanks for your reply Fred. I am glad to hear that... (show quote)

Mick , suggest you rent the bird lenses ( 70-400 , sigma 150-500) from lensrental.com and judge for yourself the pros and cons : price/weight/IQ/handling. Most of my 70-400 shots are handheld.
Much luck

Hi Fred, if its not a rude question why are you selling? Is it issues with the A65?

What sort of money are you after for the Sony 400mm lens?

Cheers,
Mick

Hi Mick , there are no issues with the A 65 , it's a great camera , however, the Nikon D 600 full frame is reasonably priced so I was thinking of selling my Sony gear. After testing the D 600 at Best Buy I think I stick with the EVF and the crop sensor ; the A 65 has a few operational advantages such as articulating LCD , 10 fps , auto switch EVF to LCD ,better autofocusing in video mode. If my future work will shift from long range/action/birding type shots to landscaping , portraits, indoor I may reconsider . The 70-400 G lens is simply outstanding and cannot be had anywhere under $1500.

Add the Tamron 60 mm f2.0 ( internal/non extending focus) whereas the Tamron 90 mm extends about 2" thus negating the working distance advantage vs the 60 mm version.

All things equal, I would prefer the 90-mm.

Thanks Nikonian , I'll buy the 90mm and give it a try. If the lens protrusion makes me too jittery I have 30 days to return it and get the 60...
I know you use a nice ring flash/hand grip. Before buying more gear I want to first try out my adjustable ( shoe mount or wirelesss) flash and monopod . Any experience with such a set-up?
Thanks again.

I want to add a true macro lens to my Sony A65 ( 1.5 crop sensor). (Either) 60mm DI 11(APS-C sensor) or 90mm (FF sensor). They both have a 4" WD ( for 1:1) and about the same dimensions , weight and price . Which one should I chose and why?
I believe that you are incorrect about WD being the same for both lenses. By my calculations, to achieve 1:1 magnification (life-size) on an APS-C sensor, WD for a 60-mm lens is about 90-mm (3.6-inches) and for a 90-mm lens is about 135-mm (5.3-inches).

1:1 WD for my Nikkor 105G on my D90 (APS-C sensor) is 157-mm (6-2-inches) to achieve 1:1, but I most often do not shoot that close.

A true macro lens will capture 1:1 magnification at full extension. Here is how to confirm field-of-view (actual magnification), when you should measure actual WD: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-36370-1.html

Nikonian , thanks for your response. Unfortunately I can't verify the WD as I don't have either lens on hand . According to Tamron's data , however, the WD for the 60 and 90 mm is the same because the front element of the 90 mm lens is recessed by 2 " while the 60mm has the glass plane upfront . The Tamron 60 is a more modern design and specifically made for APS-C dslr's.
You mentioned that you don't shoot that close anyway and crop to true macro , so would the 135mm focal lenght ( 90x1.5) be advantageous vs the 60 mm if images are taken from a further distance? . Also the A65 has a quick magnification feature ( 1.4x and 2x , somewhat like a digital zoom or extender) which allows me to get closer images at the same WD .This will reduce the 24MP to 6MP ( 2x magnification) , however. In addition the 90 mm extends by ca. 2.5 " for max magnification while the 60mm is focusing internally so no protrusion and unbalancing.
So given all these factors which one do you advice to chose ?

I want to add a true macro lens to my Sony A65 ( 1.5 crop sensor).
My set-up :
-Tamron 70-300 -macro 1:2 at 3ft( 900mm). To achieve 1:1 I use a 20mm extension tube ; WD still ca. 3 ft.
-To get 1:1 with my 18-55 lens I use the Kenko 36mm extension tube and the WD is ca. 50mm or closer.
So now I need to decide between two trueTamron macro lenses :
60mm DI 11( APS-C sensor) or 90mm (FF sensor).
They both have a 4" WD ( for 1:1) and about the same dimensions , weight and price .
Which one should I chose and why?
Thanks for your input.

Beautiful spider; beautiful web!

Douglass , thanks for the compliments. I'll try to find more insects bugs etc, around the neighborhood with a new and weak ( guide #20) shoe flash I just ordered. If I don't succeed I'll go for ring light arrangement you use.
