Since you want to retain your current gear, I would suggest the D7200, if you can get one. It is the best Nikon DSLR for your money up from the D7100 which I have. My pro buddy bought one last year and raves about the camera. The images are superb, metering system is great. The best model Nikon have ever made.

I set my D300s to back-button focus, F8/F11, C mode, and Greycard metering. Never an issue shooting. Great images. Lens Nik -16mm-55mm DX

My dad had given me other cameras but my first purchase on my own was a Nikon "F" with a FTN meter and F2 50mm lens fifty years ago and I still have it and it looks like new.

I have owned a D80 and D90 for my first digital cameras. I have also owned a D600 and currently own a D7000, D810 and D500 with a Z6ii on order.

Needless to say I am a Nikon fan.

What a mistake I made, I traded in all of my Nik film oldies, except a D90 for the D3S, D300s, D7100, No more trades. Can't dump those great lenses I have.

We are planning a trip to the Rockies starting in late May and am wondering if it would be worth it to add a new wide angle lens. I have a D7100 with a 18-55 lens. I wonder if it is worth purchasing a little bit wider lens. Specifically, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens. Would that lens be that much more beneficial?

I have a Tokina 11-16mmF2 since it came out. I use it extensively on my trips in Europe for landscape shots as well as here at home around the country, and have never seen such ghosting and flaring as per the test results you indicated. I am sure you will need to crop your images, so why do you want to to change your 18-55mm.. I Also have a D7100 with the same lens currently on the body. I als odo a walkabout with my D3S & D300S with other focal lengths. For shooting in the Rockies, I would suggest a prime lens like a 21mm.

Based on my in-dept research and user of 3 Nikon DX cameras the following DX lens that Nikon make that is are the greatest are: 12-24mm f2.8/35-70mm F2.8D/28-85mm F3.5 & 24-70mm F2.8
Hope this helps.

My pocket back-up walk-about camera is a LUMIX DMC-LX-5. Then there is my Cell phone apple-XR. Always in my car is my Nik 7100 with an 18mm-200mm lens.

I bought a D3S to complement my D300S when I am travelling in Europe and visiting the interior of historic buildings in Paris, Portugal and Spain. I needed the low light capabilities using my 16mm-35mm Nike lens or 28-200mm. I shoot at F8/F11, ISO 400-640-800 based on internal lighting conditions for all shots, no noise to worry about, that cannot be cleared on post-processing. Also crop factor meets my needs for this full frame Nikon camera. Great work horse. Would not replace it with any of the current Nikon models.

Nikon failed to service it's users, too many tweaked upgrades that were expensive that could have been delivered in prior models at the same cost. Now with their new mirrowless, change to the lens mount. I have been a long time user of the Minolta system before I made a wrong move to Nikon instead of Canon system. This is not to say that their film models were not very good.

To resolve this kind of issue, I turned off my Auto on setting in my camera.
set my ISO to 200 and S/W to manual for all of my macro type shooting. Same for others.
