My late wife and I have driven the stretch of the river between Mainz and Koblenz probably more than a dozen times and yet I haven't taken a single photo of the statue. I've got a few thousand other shots along there but none of the statue. We even camped a few times across from the rock.

Thanks for posting the link. It brought back many wonderful memories of our trips.

Thank you, DJphoto, and everyone else who responded to my original post. It's gratifying to read that so many will heed the advise I gave so that you wont have the regrets that I have.

I wish you luck and send my prayers to those who have loved ones who are struggling with illness.

Thank you all for your thoughts and words. It is heartening to hear that many are taking heed of my suggestion to photograph your loved ones, even if they don't like to have their photo taken.

My wife hated to be photographed and in order to get a shot of her I had to take her by surprise. This photo is the last one I took of her.

Normally I do not take photos of people, even people who are dear to me. The photo of my wife was taken three weeks ago. Three days after I took it she was gone.
Searching through my files of well over 100,000 photos has shown just how few pictures of her I took of her during our 40 years of marriage.

Fellow photographers - no matter what your interests are, whether it be birds, architecture, landscapes or wildlife, take the time, every day, to photograph your loved ones. Before it's too late and they're no longer there for you to shoot.

I am not looking for sympathy, so please forgive me if I don't respond to any posts. But I do thank you all for your thoughts.

All I wanted to do is pass on a lesson that I learned too late.

What isn't stated in the article is that he had been a raging alcoholic who loved to get into fights and was arrested several times for it. He gave up drinking and fighting and became a conscientious objector after his best friend was beaten to death during one of their weekend fights.

The article erroneously states that York single-handedly captured the 132 Germans although it was actually in conjunction with his platoon that they were captured.

None of this is meant to denigrate his actions but simply to ensure the accuracy of his deed.

One day when I was living in Prague and while I was waiting for a tram to take me home, it started to rain, probably one of the heaviest rainfalls I have ever been in. As you can see from the first photo, the camera couldn't focus on anything due to the amount of rain falling.
The storm only lasted about 15 minutes but flooded everything with water pouring down the steps. The young schoolgirl was waiting in the tram shelter with me but when she saw the water pouring down the steps she took off her shoes and grinned at me then ran out into the downpour. She was completely drenched within seconds but was laughing and enjoying the rain with such exuberance and glee that I just had to take her picture but before I could take it the rain stopped abruptly.
Within minutes the sun had come out again, she got on the tram and I wandered up the hill instead of heading home and took a few shots of the castle and cathedral from Petrin hill.

Today is the 100th anniversary of the ending of the Battle of the Somme, the greatest slaughter in a single battle known to man.
No other battle in history caused more senseless loss of life than this one. Although the figures have never been accurately tallied due to the incredible number of missing soldiers (72,000 British alone) it is roughly tallied at one million casualties........per side.
At one point during the opening day of the battle it is estimated that for a few hours the British lost an average of one man every 8 seconds. There are areas of the battlefield where an estimated 400 bullets and shells of all types fell on every square yard of soil.
The sheer numbers and the wanton slaughter and waste of life alone should have ensured that this was the war to end all wars. Unfortunately, no one learned a thing.

To those who served and to those who lost loved ones.

IN FLANDERS FIELD

In Flanders Field the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Lt. Col. John McCrae was a Surgeon in Belgium. He wrote this poem the day after he buried his best friend, who had been struck by an artillery shell.
McCrae died on January 28, 1918 in France of Pnuemonia and was buried with full Military Honours.
His immortal poem is read or recited around the world at countless ceremonies honouring the dead of the World Wars.

There were roughly 2100 fireflys made. the British 21st Army Group used them throughout Normandy as well as in Italy.

[quote=ole sarg]A small correction. The Brits did not have re-armed shermans. In fact very few were made.
