My notebook upgrade from Windows 8 Pro To Windows 8.1 Pro took about 1.5 hours a few days ago. No problems encountered and not much difference between 8 and 8.1.
If you don't like Windows 8/8.1 metro, just click on the little window icon in the far left of the taskbar and you will be back to Windows 7.
Remember, Windows 8/8.1 is Windows 7 w/o Aero w/metro.

You can setup the XP Mode on your Win 7 system and run Painter 4 Essentials from there.

Install True Launch Bar and move all you desktop icons to it on the taskbar and you will have a clean windows screen and the icons will stay where you put them on the taskbar.

Simply stated, Windows 8 is Windows 7 w/o Aero with Metro. If you install Classic Shell, you get the benefits of both OS's.
