We in the UK are not without our quota of ignorant photographic know all's. It is even worse when the ignorance is found at your local camera club, and from one of the members of the committee. I was to give an evening introduction about what I do for a living in the photographic field. As the members made their way into the club room, The higher achy took up most of the front row you could tell who they were by their blazers and club tie's plus of course the Canikon medallion's (camera's) around their necks. I thought It's going to be a tough night. I overheard the Club Secretary ask a new member, what Nikon do you use. His reply was I don't have a Nikon I use a Sony A900. That was the first and last time the Secretary spoke to him all evening, although they were sat next to each other. What a way to treat a new member, the Secretaries camera was a Nikon D800. If I'm not mistaken the sensor is made by Sony and tweaked by Nikon. Ignorance as they say is bliss, blissfully unaware of the technicalities of his camera. Equipment snobbery is rife here in the UK. If it isn't Canon or Nikon then you aren't in the club. Which made me popular (not) as I use Micro 4/3rds camera's on my drones ha ha

I have a photography business here in the UK. I have had nothing but problems with the Canon Repair centre here in Scotland. On one occasion I was having a shutter replacement done on a 1D MK2. They phoned me and said my camera was ready for collection. I drove the Seventy miles to Glasgow only to find my camera was still on the shelf untouched. Six weeks later, I picked it up repaired. They know I run a business and the camera was badly needed, it made no difference to them. I attended the Photography show in Birmingham a few months ago and went straight to the Canon stand. I handed my business card to the rep and enquired about the 1DX he went away, I thought to get the camera 20 minutes I waited when I enquired again complete indifference and I got nowhere. I came across the Panasonic stand it was massive. Again I handed my business card over and the rep took us to a seated area got us coffee and asked us questions about our type of business. Then he took us to the camera's, nothing was to much trouble and we came away very impressed, so much so that my Canon gear is gone replaced by Panasonic with no regrets what so ever, other than the equipment snobbery shown by my contemporises. I expected it anyway, if it isn't Canon or Nikon then your not a pro.Brian

LITTLE KNOWN TIDBIT OF NAVAL HISTORY

The U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides), as a combat vessel, carried 48,600 gallons of fresh water for her crew of 475 officers and men. This was sufficient to last six months of sustained operations at sea. She carried no evaporators (i.e. fresh water distillers).

However, let it be noted that according to her ship's log, "On July 27, 1798, the U.S.S. Constitution sailed from Boston with a full complement of 475 officers and men, 48,600 gallons of fresh water, 7,400 cannon shot, 11,600 pounds of black powder and 79,400 gallons of rum."

Her mission: "To destroy and harass English shipping."

Making Jamaica on 6 October, she took on 826 pounds of flour and 68,300 gallons of rum.

Then she headed for the Azores , arriving there 12 November. She provisioned with 550 pounds of beef and64,300 gallons of Portuguese wine.

On 18 November, she set sail for England . In the ensuing days she defeated five British men-of-war and captured and scuttled 12 English merchant ships, salvaging only the rum aboard each.

By 26 January, her powder and shot were exhausted. Nevertheless, although unarmed she made a night raid up the Firth of Clyde in Scotland . Her landing party captured a whiskey distillery and transferred 40,000 gallons of single malt Scotch aboard by dawn. Then she headed home.

The U. S. S. Constitution arrived in Boston on 20 February 1799, with no cannon shot, no food, no powder, no rum,no wine, no whiskey, and 38,600 gallons of water .

If you didn't buy any, I hope you made some Fig Preserves. They are the best. BOL.

Hi SteveR, the club has been preserving Figs since 1991. As you can see from my avatar, I am also doing my bit to preserving Figs. Seriously My Figaro is dedicated to my late father and is named Ron. The Figaro club is like an extension of my own family. I have never been a member of a club that is more caring of its members. Check out the web page www.figaroownersclub.com

So sorry to hear of your troubles. Wish you a speedy recovery and pray that the situation will improve soon for you and your family. Times like this remind me how lucky I and my family are and to stop whinging and live life. Pleased that you are at least coming back to have a look. Wishing you all the best.

I know you didn't come on to ask for sympathy or financial support. How about if the members start a collection for you? With so many members, even a small amount each will add up to something substancial to help tie you over? If you are happy to post your bank account here or PM it to members asking for it, I am sure members will respond. Come on members, let's help a friend. One day, we may help you in return.

I'm willing to join. When I returned from an assignment in Afghanistan my work had dried up so no income. To be honest with you, my nerves were shot anyway. The Nissan Figaro club of Great Britain stepped in and helped me financially and made sure I go to the annual FigFest held 300 odd miles from my home. I met all my friends and it did wonders for my confidence. I'm sure the Hog can do the same for one of our own in trouble. Come on folks I know times are hard but lets show the hog is not just a discussion club but a family made up of like minded people

Annie there is no excuse for a member sending you pm's of that nature. I for one would certainly make them public for the Hog to see and then let him deny it. I don't know if the Hog is moderated but it should be and no member should have to endure PM's of this nature.

But many newbies want to impress the pros that they know more than the pros.

Many Newbies may be pros. I personally have not come across any new members or amateurs joining the Hog showing me what a fantastic photographer they are. I have only come across people who really want to learn how to use and operate their camera's so as to improve their picture taking. There is enough collective knowledge on the Hog that it should be classed as a University of photography everyone whether pro or amateur can learn from this site.

Annie, Yes illegitimate businesses do stick in my crow. Unfortunately since the digital revolution everyone out there is now a photographer. We the Legitimate businesses just have to rise above the situation and let our photography speak for our professionalism. There is a rift happening in the Hog between pros and amateurs, and it is the pros that are causing the problem by thinking certain questions put forward by the OP's are stupid or repetitive. We the pros must realize that if we haven't anything constructive or instructive to say in answer to an OP's question then we should say nothing. You had given a good answer in your first post and that should have been sufficient. The second post was not asked or called for.

where was this verbal attack? actually if you look at this thread I was the one attacked by the OP. If she is a legal business then my comment did not apply to her as it was not ment too. she flew off the handle, I did not.

as for jerry, he just likes to send rude messages calling me every name he can think of privately so other members can't see his true character.

Annie, the question was about professional labs not about being registered for tax. Do you honestly believe that pro labs only carry out work for pros. Yes you did give a legitimate answer to her question in your first reply. There was no need for the second post, as you did not have all the facts to draw to the conclusion whether she was a pro or not. If we stick to the questions asked, we would have a lot less negativity on the Hog. Due to your second post we now have two people at odds with each other who both believe they were right. This is not what the Hog is about and it happens far to often here.

Again we have a verbal attack to someone asking a legitimate question. What the hell has being registered for tax got to do with finding out what is the best pro lab. I know of so called pro's who use the local 1 hour service rather than produce their own prints. I also know of very accomplished amateurs who use my local pro lab. The Hog should be a band of brothers (and sisters) who help each other reach his/her highest photographic potential, not a slanging match which has nothing to do with the question asked. Personally I have my own pro printing equipment, I have it set up the way I like my prints to turn out. So when it goes wrong and it does, I only have myself to blame, I don't have to phone up some guy to have a protracted conversation about how poor my prints have come out.

Did someone call me! Yes I'm a Pro and I'm no God, since joining the Hog I have been helped just as much as any help I have been able to give a member. You are always learning new tricks on the Hog no matter how experienced you are, there is always someone that bit more experienced to learn from. As to what camera, the best camera is the one that gives you the results you are after within your own knowledge base. As you progress through the wonderful field of photography and gain more knowledge you will recognize when you are starting to outgrow your present camera. That is when you seriously consider your next step, and consider it well as it can be a minefield where many an expensive mistake has been made. The other consideration is to buy second user there are many bargains out there in Ebay land example just recently a Canon 1Ds with less than 50,000 actuation's £250 on the Bay. Worth considering at that price.
