Just got some bad news from Canon: my SX50 is not repairable. LCD stopped working; might be "imaging center" issue, but not something they would attempt to fix as would cost more than camera is worth.

And since it died 8 weeks after warranty expired, they will not honor.

They will sell me a refurbished SX50 for $300 - and that was only after I asked what is best they could do when I called them after receiving an email "offer" of $368. I said no thanks.

I told them I have owned 2 Canon DSLR's and have touted the SX50 on ugly hedgehog for a year, and probably 30 people have bought them because of me. Unfortunately, that didn't matter :-(

I admit I told friends a few months ago that even if my SX50 "died today," I'd feel I had gotten my money's worth because of the awesome opportunities and experiences I've had with it.

Bee7474 suggested purchasing a year's added warranty with next bridge camera. Since I shot 58,000 photos in just under 14 months, I'm thinking that wouldn't be a bad idea.

The deal they offered isn't all that bad. Maybe you can call back and ask if the offer is still good and if they can up the warranty for you.

Well that is not the news you wanted to hear.... so sorry, Linda.
Refurbished for $300, you're better off adding the little extra and getting new........
Good luck!

Oh, Linda!!!
I am so very sorry to hear this rotten news. I was so hoping they would repair it or replace it if not repairable.
As you know, I am one of the people who bought my SX50 based on your photos and experiences with yours.
I am just bummed out BIG TIME!!! for you.
So, what do you plan to do about a replacement? Another SX50, wait for the SX60, or some other brand? If you continue to take so many shots, an extended warranty is probably a good idea depending on cost vs price of camera.
Keep us posted, please.

Sorry to hear that Linda, That's about par for big corporation. (Oh no we can't give anyone a break.......we have to try and set a record profit for the year!) I'm busy shooting the country side up with the Panasonic FZ70 that I picked up while the Nikon P520 is being repaired, and I think I like it better.

Thats sad news Linda, I feel for you. We have laws here that state that what ever the warrantee statement the product must be of merchantable quality and 8 week outside a warrantee would be challengeable and the supplier not the manufacturer would be responsible.

I hope you get sorted without too much out of pocket costs,

Geoff

That is terrible news Linda. Doesn't say too much about Canon. They should tune into UHH and see how much PR you have given them. Good luck with your choice of a replacement. And that won't be easy. I know how much you loved that SX50.I think if you had a little more time with it you could have made it dance! LOL

Thank you all so much for your comments and suggestions. I'm going to hold off for a little bit - might look into an extender for one of my T3i lenses :)

It is always distressing when a decent quality device dies, especially so close to the end of the warranty period, but it does seem that you got your value from it and quite probably managed to reach the limits of one design specification or another.

It would certainly have been nice for Canon to make an exception in your case given the good publicity you have given them, perhaps a good will discount voucher on other products or some such. Good karma is worth a lot.

Unfortunately in this tech oriented world, margins are thin and products usually have a finite useful life either in terms of time, wear and tear, upgrade potential or supportability.

For such a good value device like the SX50 it is always a trade off, but the concept of thinking of it as a 'disposable camera', buying the extended warranty and using the living daylights out of it for a couple of years till the next worthwhile replacement comes along can make good economic sense.

So, my sympathies, (empathies in fact, from a different tech domain), but good luck in finding a replacement that gives you a better experience.

Take care

Sonsabitches. After all the advertising you've done for them? Hmmph! How much does Canon spend on a single advertisement in any magazine or Sunday supplement? Or on online advertising? Given what you've done for Canon and the SX50 here, seems to me springing for a new one would be far more than cost-effective for their marketing department, if not in goodwill alone, for a forum with some 40K-plus members all slathering at the bit to buy Canon's latest offering. Well, maybe they're not slathering quite so much tonight after reading Canon's response to your issue.

On you next new purchase, go to http://www.squaretrade.com and extend the warranty. If they can't fix it within 5 business days, they refund your FULL purchase price. Technology always gets better and cheaper, so you can get a better toy if the worst happens. I usually don't get warranties, but on real expensive electronics, these warranties are much less than in store ones and offer better protection after the factory warranty runs out...
