I have several lens for my d40 and purchased several lens before I settled on one that I really like. I have the 18-105 which pretty much takes care of everything that I like to shoot.
The Magic Lantern series on your camera is the best. The camera manual that came with the camera sucks. The light finally came on when I purchased that book and followed each lesson and then just snap away.
I have purchased two Nikon refurbished cameras from B & H Photo and would never purchase anything else. I have had no problems with either and they come with the same warranty as a new one. For the record I have purchased a d3000 and a d60 and every lens that I own is refurbished. So far so good.

As a serious photo hobbyist, I totally agree with going to KEH. I have never been to the store but I have purchased merchandise from them (Nikon d60) and I was totally satisfied with the camera and the customer service. Believe me I made many phone calls prior to purchasing and everyone on the other end of the phone conversation was very patient and very knowledgeable. The 6 month warranty was also a great plus. I have been buying from B&H photo for at least 15 years and not only is their customer service great but their prices are great as well. So I don't think you can go wrong with either one.
