Hello! I am in need of a SLR camera to learn on. I cannot afford a $700 camera (YET), so if anyone has any SLR's that they don't use, affordable, and good for learning, please contact me. I am an aspiring pro-photographer, but I need practice practice practice. All I have is a Kodak EasyShare P&S, and my sweet dad is giving me another P&S this Christmas (2011) a Fujifilm 16MP touchscreen P&S, but I haven't used it yet. I am getting married in the next year and a half, and saving for that, and also have two children. We are also trying to move out of our neighborhood (away from the inlaws!) and get a little bit more house with bigger yard. I am an artist, and majored in visual arts in college, but not photography. After I had my second child, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, so my drawing and painting has become painful. I worked in the eye field as an optometrist's assistant for 5 years, and love it, but now I stay at home, and suffering with the Arthritis...I want to have my own business so I don't have to depend on my fiance for everything, and still be able to practice my artsy skills without so much pain. I am 27, and I know I can do this, I just need the proper equipment to practice, and take a few classes at the local college and with that, I hope to start a business! I just need a camera to get started learning, but cannot spend too much. Thanks for reading my story! I hope someone has a camera they don't need and can let go for cheap! I would be so thankful!

Check out Adorama and other online places like Amazon. Use caustion tho. Ask the experts here if you find what sounds good. Maybe even a "refurbished" camera would fit your budget. There are more knowledgeable people on here who will probably answer this but since I was here wanted to leave "encouraging words."

go straight to KEH.com, do not go pass go, do not check out ebay or amazon both way overpriced especially ebay buy it now. Last month I bought a used nikon D-100 dslr in mint condition for $160.00 with a 6 month warranty from Keh. amazon wanted 500 and ebay wanted 250-450 for same 7 yr old camera. You can trust KEH, they have excellant customer service, do their own insite repairs, and the merchandise is in better shape then they rate it at. I checked all over the net, compared prices on digital and film equipment, KEH is the only place for used I will buy from now. Picked up a like new nikon N-55 slr for $14.00, an older used with some scuff marks on the barrel tamaroon 90-300mm zoom for $19.00, a brand new well made sunpack monopod for $11.00.TAKE MY ADVICE DO NOT BOTHER TO SHOP ANYWHERE ELSE.

As a serious photo hobbyist, I totally agree with going to KEH. I have never been to the store but I have purchased merchandise from them (Nikon d60) and I was totally satisfied with the camera and the customer service. Believe me I made many phone calls prior to purchasing and everyone on the other end of the phone conversation was very patient and very knowledgeable. The 6 month warranty was also a great plus. I have been buying from B&H photo for at least 15 years and not only is their customer service great but their prices are great as well. So I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

$$$ being an important issue to 99% of us it is not just the camera, but the camera and add-on items such as lenses that are to be considered in choosing. I went with Sony a-230 and an a-330 Refurbished directly from Sony on line store. Right now they have a a-330 with a lens worth $200 included. The a-330 combo is in stock for $378. A refurb 55-200 mm tele lens $170. It is sensible to take out the extended warranty from Sony or from Mack ($30 for 5 years).

With this camera you have millions of now low cost AF (auto-focus) lenses from 1985 on. The anti shake is built into the camera body ... while Nikon and Canon have anti shake built into the lens.. so you buy the technology with each lens,,, Sony you buy once,, in the body.

There is a wide range of fool the camera adapters. I have a 1972 200 mm M-42 screw mount that I can use as manual focus. The Sony alpha to M-42 adapter is less than $10. There is a similarly priced flash shoe adapter to allow generic units (new low voltage,,, remember some old flashes have 200 v triggers and would fry any new DSLR).

Regan25, don't know how severe your RA is but something else you may need to consider is the weight of the camera, especially if you're used to handling P&S.
Olympus has their PEN series of camera, slightly larger than P&S but with DSLR photo quality, Panasonic and now Nikon have their versions as well. But I definitely agree with the others here, go used or refurbished. Just don't let sales person talk you into a camera that isn't comfortable in your hands.

I was actually hoping to sell my E-520 this year so I could upgrade but certain unexpected expenses put an end to that dream.

Best of luck, I'm sure you'll be able to find what you're looking for at a price you can afford.

With RA I am wondering if you would be better to start with a good used P&S like a Panasonic Lumix that offers a lot of the same features as a d-slr without the weight..
and you could pick one up for under $200.. like a FZ8 or Fz-10

you might look for "factory Refurbished" dslr, great breaks on price and gear is tip top from my experience,y first dslr was an entry level Pentax (*ist/dl) Took great images,
It just lacked some of the bells and whistles of higher end gear.
Hope this was a help.

Yep KEH is a great place to shop www.KEH.com I've purchased many cameras and accessories from them over the years. They rate the used equipment and are usually right on the money about how good or how used it is. And later when you upgrade they will give you money or trade in value for your equipment. They sell new equipment too. Its worth looking at.

I don't know if you found a camera yet. When I wanted one, I searched prices all over the internet. Being broke made me search far and wide. I ended up with a Canon Rebel XS, 18-55mm, 75-300mm....cheapest price ? QVC ! They had a 4 payment plan, and even that was steep for me. I called them and they gave me 5 payments !

Would you like a Canon Rebel K2 35mm camera in Mint Condition? It would be a great starter camera for your photography class. The price is real cheap - $0.00!

You'll have to download the owner's manual from canon's website. I believe it's free.

If you want it just PM me your info.

yet another vote for KEH, Adorama and B&H are also honest houses. Might check Craigs list for gear in your area, be sure to test drive it on the spot.

If you look at Ebay ( I haev had grerat luck here) make sure you check out the sellers feedback and read the auction VERY CLOSELY and understand exactly what it contains.

Please take a look at my Pentax istDs camera and lens posted here in classified. This is what I learned on, it's small and only weights 1 pound 10 oz. If you don't like it I'll take it back.
