Amazon Photos!

Recently, the D drive on my windows 10 computer totally disappeared, containing all of my images! After a chat with Adobe, they sent me to Microsoft where one of their techs was able to locate it after a lot of searching
and restore it to my hard drive. Of course, I had to re-link the whole thing to Lightroom, but it finally was accomplished with the help of an Adobe tech. Scared me to death, since I thought they were all gone forever! I did have a back up, which helped to make the relinking easier. I will ever be grateful to those techs who saved my life!

Amazon Photos! My camera club has 2 print contests monthly as well as a projected one, so I use them a lot! I have never heard a judge comment on prints being of low quality when made with Amazon. Also very reasonable prices.
Free shipping, too, if you have Prime.

It's easier to get to the correct place if you Google Amazon Photos, rather than trying to search on their website. Don't know why. It's not the user friendliest place, either, so you may have to persevere. But it IS doable.

DWU2, That's it! It worked! You have saved me countless hours of tedious, boring work! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have finished 4 years' worth of photos so far, and about 7700 virtual copies are now GONE! Yay!!!

The OP was concerned with virtual copies, not duplicate files. Virtual copies exist only in the LR catalog, and duplicate utilities won't find them. As I recall, VC's are tagged on the filmstrip and on the grid with a "folded" lower left corner, making them easier to spot. Perhaps the fastest way to remove them would be to search by Attributes, and in the upper right corner of the screen, under Kind, select Virtual Copy. You could then select all and remove them all from the catalog.

DWU2, Now, that sounds like something that might actually work! I am excited and will try it very soon. Thank you so much!

I do not use LR or Adobe products, but I have experienced the same situation or problem with other photo processing programs. In my case the problem was "created" when I processed or loaded the same file folders of images on two different computers.

Laptop--used to cull images and keyword and star rate them.
Desktop--additional keywording and ratings and processing. Secondary files like Jpegs created.
Laptop--deleted original file folders and loaded the updated versions. When file folders were opened I found Master and Virtual copies.

Two work around--delete the Virtual copies; or modify slightly the name of the file folders so the software thinks these are new file folders.

Most efficient workaround. Use the laptop for culling only. Use the desktop for keywording, ratings and processing and secondary files.

For LR and Adobe, I bet there is a way to avoid this problem. I will keep reading to see if I can learn something.

Thanks for chiming in here. I appreciate your effort, but I have all my images on only a laptop. Does anything that you suggested here correlate with that? I’m still searching for a way to avoid having to delete the virtual copies one at a time.

It’s going to be a long process, I know. As I watched one of the football games last night, I sat there and worked on removing them, one at a time, and didn’t even make a dent. I surely hope someone will come to my aid here. Sorry you couldn’t help.

The way I do it is probably not the best way! I figured it out myself, and so there are probably other ways that are more direct but here’s what I do.
The photos appear in Internet Explorer, the little file folder icon. I create a new folder and name it. I drag all the images into it, according to the title I gave it, such as Amelia‘s birthday party. My images are organized into years, so I drag that little folder into 2023. Then I open Lightroom and click Import and go through the usual process.
Like I said, I’m sure there must be simpler ways, but this one works for me.

Thanks, but there's no chance that ever happened! I just went back to my 2017 files when I first started using LR and had no idea there was such a thing as a virtual copy, and I found about 300 virtual copies in the first few folders there that I removed, of course!! Many frames had 2 of them! I'm going to have so much room on my hd, even though I know that vc's don't take up very much room.

Thanks for trying.

Do you need to have a lot of photos in collections? I only have a few because I stuck to my folder organization system. I do back up to Lightroom for my iPhone photos, though
Thanks for the tip about removing them in the grid view. I’ve been going one by one through many folders and just got tired of doing that so that’s why I am here with you all on the hedgehog. Thank you.
