Jerry, the reason for the thin piece of wood is to prevent scratching of the finish wood that you are cutting. Notice, that the saw is sitting on top of wood. Normally I would use painters tape on bottom of skid plate to prevent scratching on finished wood. ( That is my thought on the thin board.)
Cassy,sorry to hear about dropping your Lens. I haven't been brave enough to tell anyone that I accidently dropped my Camera and lens (about $800) in lake Superior in Michigan. while kayaking, My paddle was slipping off my lap when taking a picture and the rest of the story goes on. But it didn't take long to buy another one!! This picture was of me crying at a distance.
