A little tip for dark skin people shooting, when using a reflector for fill, use the gold one, it brings out tone in their skin better than any of the other ones.

This great big thank you goes to Lucian, George Kwain, Hammster, rpavich and JBTAYLOR. I have read your comments and appreicate every one of them. Lots of good ideas to think about.

I used a Sony a850. I changed the cameras setting to take the photos at +2 stops over. I wanted to make sure the white background and clothing came out white and not grey.

Use custom white balance and a gray card. The clothing still came out gray. It's just overexposed gray. And, as you discovered, the skin is also overexposed.

I don't know how to set a custom white balance but thank you for trying to help.

Can anyone give me any tips on photographing a dark skined person against a white background? I have taken some photos and the background came out fine but the dark skin was over-exposed. Thanks.

Interesting - I would think with the white BG the camera would tend to UNDER expose the skin.
Post a sample along with the settings that got that image.

Expose for the skin, the white background will be washed out... This is what you want no?

Better yet, use a color chart and everything will be fine once you use that as a 'talon'.

The idea here is not to go for the extremes but the middle ground.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try useing a color chart next time.

This is another photoart picture I did using a horse from Susanville Ca. and the Catalina mountains near Tucson AZ. after a rare snow storm.
After doing a bunch of editing on PS7 I tonemapped it with photomatrix.
Some will like it. Some wont.
Make comments if you like.

I would have made sure there was more space under the horses mouth. The head should not be touching the bottom edge of the photo.

Steller sea lions seem to be a low interest subject at UH. I am trying again to see if the response to my first sea lion post was an anomaly or if there is some prejudice against these loud animals.

I loved every one of those spectacular photographs!

If you "backed up" to a dvd disk you won't be able to see what's on it unless you "restore" what's on it to your hard drive.

If you merely "copied" to the disk you should be able to see it.

I do not backup - I just make copies on cd's and dvd's. I rarely use "backup" for this reason - you cannot see what's on a "backup" disk.

I did "back-up" to the disk! Thanks for letting me know I can't see anything until I restore to the hard drive.
