You’ve got it right of course—I know anything on line is a digital file, ideally optimized for web display. I’m not trying to sell anything, nor was I denigrating Flicker. I was simply inquiring if there were sites that were more ‘professional looking than Flickr (whatever ‘professional’ might might mean.)

Thanks for this—I appreciate your civil response in the face of some snarky responses from other members.

I know anecdotes are not data, but. . .MINI? Come on! My 2018 Cooper S was always touch and go, & if you’d peek into the very overcrowded engine compartment, you’ll see why. My 2002 BMW 5 series was quite reliable by comparison—as long as I rigorously followed the maintenance schedule.

Of late, I’ve noticed many people commenting on how the ease and quality of the latest phone cameras make lugging around a dslr seem superfluous.
But while I love the convenience and quality( I currently use an iPhone 14 Pro Max), there’s one significant limitation: using the phone camera in bright sunlight.
I live in Tampa Florida, and even when I raise screen brightness to the max, it’s not always possible to see clearly enough to overcome the contrast & glare. I can adjust the screen to 2000 nits, but after about 2 minutes the screen dims to prevent overheating. Not so great when I’m carefully composing shots!

Optical viewfinders, of course are free from this limitation, which is why I always carry my D850 around.

Your thoughts?

Hi all,
I currently own and use a Nikon D850, a Nikon D700, and once in a great while a Nikon Coolpix E5000. The latter two use CF cards, while right now I’m just using an SD card for the 850, though I plan on getting a CF Express card at some point (the 850 is a late build.)
I’m wondering if there’s a card reader that can accommodate a CF, SD, and CF Express. Any recomendations?

A slightly different take on the question:

Thought you'd enjoy these comments:

"I ( Godard cinematographer Fabrice Aragno) built a special 3D grip out of wood, and mounted two [Canon] 5D Mark II bodies together, one upside down so I could register the sensors in the same angle-of-view for perfect or “imperfect” 3D, avoiding parallax and so to get the best effect from both cameras. There were no computers involved in this calibration. Just a hammer and a chisel. It is artisan filmmaking." [19]

He went on to say, “I choose to work with the Leica lenses because the Canon lenses are too perfect. They have no defect. In digital it is too clean in my opinion. As we are not made with 1 and 0; we need imperfect.” [20]

Fast primes meant something when film and manual focus cameras were king—slower films for higher quality enlargements, plus large apertures for easier focusing in low light.

“Sharp” is certainly not the sole criterion for a good photo. Introduce the judges to the Avedon blur” and proceed accordingly.

Not covering maintenance is also true of automotive extended ‘warranties,’ which are really insurance policies.
Case in point: years ago I had a valve spring break at 100,000 miles on a BMW 530i protected by an extended warranty.
They covered the repair to the tune of $3500. As the head was off, my mechanic asked if he should replace the other valve springs as well, since a valve spring breaking at 100,000 was unusual & he suspected there might be a bad batch in the engine. He quoted a price of $600. When I contacted the warranty company they declined, stating that they covered only repairs, not preventive maintenance.
I asked them if next week another valve spring failed while under warranty, would they spend another $3500? “Yup,” they answered.

I sold the car.
