Guys

I use a program called PTE AV Studio but I did look at the website for Photopia and was impressed. I just may get it as a Black Friday gift to myself if they have a Black Friday special! Anyone know if they do? It does look like a good slide show program and I do very little video so I like to put slide shows together as a way of showing some of my work. I
How easy is it to get familiar with Photopia Creative?

First, I am not bothered by weight. I’m used to carrying heavy cameras. I used to carry 2)D6 and big lenses around horse shows. When you think about it, it’s the lenses that are the heaviest part of the camera, if you use fast glass, so what’s another lb?
My Z lenses include:
14-24 2.8
24-70 2.8
70-200 2.8
24-120 4.0
100-400 4.5-5.6
MC 105 2.8 Macro
Waiting for my 400 2.8 TC.

F Lenses include:
10.5 2.8
24 1.4
8-15 3.5-4.5
12-24 4
14-24 2.8
17-35 2.8 DX
24-70 2.8
24-120 4.0
50 1.2
50 1.4
70-200 2.8 VR
60 2.8 macro
105 2.8 Macro
84 1.4
200 2.0
Sigma Art 105 1.4

Just sold my 180-400 TC in anticipation of the arrival of my new Z400 2.8TC. Still waiting!!!

I’m heavily into Nikon. I am so familiar with it. It’s so comfortable to me. Switching would be challenging and not worth my effort.

I would seriously consider going to the Z9 first, before switching entire systems. Like I said before, the cost of the new Sony G series lenses alone would cost more than than the Z9 and the FTZ adapter.

Setting up the Z9 is not complicated if you have been shooting digital for a while. It can be quite simple, or as complex as you want it to be. There are loads of customizable setting that you can play with later. The first setting I set up are date and time, color space, file type (RAW, JPEG, TIFF or multiple), which card the images go to and my copyright info. That’s about all you have to do to get it going. It has a built in GPS so it automatically attaches the coordinates to each images. Really like that.

I am happy to walk you through menus and how I set up my cameras.

Hope this is helpful. Let me know if I can be of assistance.
Best regards
RL

Good morning RL
You have 2 Z9s, you have to be kidding' me!
So tell me, do you have any Z lenses?
If so, which ones did you purchase?
Do you have any old glass from Nikon, if so, which ones?
You told me that you only do stills, like me, but how did you know how to set the new Z9?
Do you not find that the Z9 is too heavy?

The truth, I had given up in my quest to buy a Z9, but you certainly have brought back that option, and made me a little more undecided as to which way to go now. Oh, the pressures of buying new gear!!

Thanx for your input, I think I can certainly learn from someone like you as to why you chose Nikon.
What type of photography do you do?
Do you print any of your pics?

Hi RL

Yes, I think that the menus from your older A7R and the soon to be released (October 26th is the announcement) A7RV will be different, but the truth
I have been trying to talk myself into getting the Z9 for a long time, but I do not do video, and I think that the Z9 would just not be the right camera for me.
I am a photographer at a summer children's day camp & overbite camp (spend Monday through Thursday at the day camp & then drive 3 hours to spend Friday to Sunday at the residential overnight camp, where I will take at least 600 pictures/day at the day camp, and around 900 pics/day at the overnight camp, edit, and post on the camp website the pics I like so everyone can see what the campers & staff do each day. I also print about 225 ics/day to give to the kids, both campers and staff, to hang on their walls, from 4" x 6" to 13" x 19", using either an Epson ET-8550 printer or an HP 24" Z9+ printer.
The rest of the year I shoot landscapes, architecture, street photography, family, sports, basically a little of everything, and try to print for myself what I or my wife, feel we should put on on a wall for a time!
Hardly any video!!

Your thoughts?

I did that and went back to Nikon. Could not stand the Sony menus. A big question for you is, how many f mount lenses do you have? You can use them on the Z cameras with the FTZ or FTZII adapter

I have 2 bodies
The 850 & the d500
2 lenses for the 500, the kit 16 -80 2.8 + 70-300
And
35 2.8
50 1.4
85 2.8
105 macro 2.8
70-200 2.8 Ii
Fisheye (manual focus)

I tried my friend’s Z9 for an hour and it was a great camera, I should get it, but really felt it was very heavy.

I mean the new Sony mirrorless camera have a new menu that I have read are much easier to navigate than their older models.

I will only be getting 3 lenses at the beginning, and I have read that the 24-105 f4 is a great all-purpose lens that is very sharp.

I will also get their 79-200f4 which is much lighter than what I have now and I understand is not available in the new Z mount lens that Nikon has brought out at this time!

Was going to wait to see if/when a Z8 was going to be released but no talk/ rumours that I am hearing at all!

Comments please

You will love the 850. More than a simple upgrade to the 810, it will advance your photography if you use all of what it offers. I am negligent in not doing so myself, but it is there if you want it. Things like focus stacking and in-camera HDR. The 45 mpx. sensor will allow you to crop tighter and compose shots you couldn't before. Congrats on the new camera but don't discount buying in the future. I too am 72 and just in the last six months have transitioned to mirrorless. Due to weight, you may head there someday yourself.

Well I, too, have had a D850 for many years, have loved it in so many ways, but am trying to sell it now and move to mirrorless as I am finding it much too heavy! I am 80.
Was just wondering what mirrorless camera are you thinking I of moving to?
I am thinking of the very soon to be released Sony a7R V, and just feel I want to treat myself to something special and at this time Sony seems the way to go for me, although I was really thinking of the Canon R5 for a while

What an amazing story with such a happy ending! Walking for days after Major Surgery!! Now if that ain't amazing, what else is!! Tongue in cheek for this "amazing story".
I truly hope that by the time your back is strong enough to support your next Z9, it arrives at your door!

I think we should even make a movie of this! It truly can be the most happy ending to an awesome story! Nikon, don't miss this opportunity to produce this one!!

I have had my ET-8550 for over 6 months and just love it!

Heads never dry out,

ink is so much cheaper than any other printer I have ever had,

I even sold my 2 Canon Pro-100 printers that I had as I just love how cheap the ink costs are,

and the results are awesome.

I have actually been printing on some Canon Lustre paper that was left over when I sold my Canons, as well as a number of Red River papers, which have profiles for the 8550, and am using some Epson Lustre and getting great results with all papers.

Still trying out new profiles but really love this printer

But are the cost for expendables, i.e. ink & paper, much cheaper with the DNP or Epson solution?

Hi Carl S

You are correct, this is not helping me with my printer choice, but would love to talk about the camps I am at now, and the village of Halliburton has been part of my camp journey for almost 50 years, and I have been in camping for more than 60 years. The other camp I went to was near the village of Huntsville!

I need a lake in my life and those 2 Northern Ontario areas certainly have met a need that I seem to have.

Stay healthy!

WoW!! I am getting a few replies, with a few suggestions, which I really appreciate.

I think that the dye sub is a good suggestion, but I do not like the fact that when it will be discontinued, I will be in trouble.

Just heard from another friend whom suggest that I look into an Epson SureLab d1070, but do not know a thing about it. Anyone have any experience with an Epson SureLab before?

a few hundred 4" x 6" pictures per day.

I am retired, love photography, and used to run a residential co-ed camp in Northern Ontario for over 40 years, and during those years, when I could fnd the time, I shot many pictures, and at the end of each period of camp, would show a slide show, with music, to the entire camp the last night before the kids would go home. This is where I honed my love of photography, and tuned my technical knowledge.

Now, during my summers, I still go to camp, and am the photographer, shooting from 600 to 1000 pics/day, edit them in LightRoom, and post many of them so parents of campers and staff can see what is happening around camp each day.

I have also decided from day one that since campers have to be "screen free" while at camp, they never get to see any of the pics, so I have been printing pics daily, from around 200 4" x 6"; 20 8.5" x 11"; and a few 13" x 19", especially the ones that have the entire cabin included so one can make out the individual campers/staff, but as this summer is coming up, I have been thinking that there just is not enough time in each day to continue to do all this and have been looking for a printer that can print much fast than what I have now, ( Last year I used my Epson ET-7750 + ET -8550, and when I just did not have enough time, I used my larger printer, my 24" HP Z9+, where I would print many 4" x 6" prints and then trim, which also took a lot of time).

Girls & Guys,

I have been reading UH for a long time now, have received much info from all of you, and am now looking specifically for some help myself. Looking forward to hearing from a few of you soon

So, tell me Gourmand,

how did you use Matt's set up of your Z9, and have you tried to change any of his recommendations?
I am a D850 + D500 shooter, but have been really thinking hard if I should get the Z9, and sell both my 850 & 500, or keep my 500?

Well, thank you so much for all your suggestions!

After reading & re-reading them, I am now going. try both PhotoShop + try a 1 month free version of ON1 to try to see if I can use their "Tile" area of the program!

Happy & Healthy holidays everyone

That can "tile" any picture into a number of parts with the goal of being able to print larger than what my 24" printer is capable of printing, i.e., taking a picture and tiling it into 3 panels lengthwise, or taking any pictures into 3 panels wide by 3 panels high, or 4 panels wide by 4 panels high, etc.

I am using LR Classic, and I am not able to do this easily, just purchased Qimage One for Mac but not sure if this program will "tile" any picture,
but I am looking for help out there among all my friends who enjoy printing their photos to hang on their walls, and can help me find a program that will suit me needs, anyone???
