I recommend Ellis Falls in the Pinkham Notch region. One of the best.

Thanks Walkabout. I'll look into this!

The route from Mt Washington to Conway is beautiful, and goes on into Maine, Naples has a stern wheeler boat ride, nice area, Freedom Cafe is good place to eat. We've done that trip, BTW it gets very cold at the top of Mt. Washington, take a jacket!

Thanks again Bob

Unless you have or hire a chauffeur, and you're into photography, forget driving a private car. There are pull-offs, but the entire trip is scenic. The Mount Washington cog railway or the auto-road tour van are far better options.

And be sure to check the weather, it's often foggy in the extreme.

Also the Kancamagus Highway is most famous for fall foliage, but offers plenty of great photo opportunities in the other seasons -- including a covered bridge and four waterfalls.

There is one White Mountains photo guide I'm aware of, but it's oriented towards the fall leaf season.

MDI Mainer, thanks for the wealth of info. I have the book "Waterfall of the White Mountains" and is one of my traveling companions. I'll study your other suggestions as well.

We spent about twenty years camping right by the lake. Be sure to ride on the M/S Mount Washington. I worked on it for two summers.

Jerry,
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look that up.

Just got back from NH. If you're interested in lupines, you might still get some shots. I would check the Harman's Cheese and Country Store website. They usually have some up to date photos of lupine conditions in Sugar Hill. If you go there, Sunset Hill is a great location for, you guessed it, sunset shots. There is a great view of the Presidential Range. On Kancamagus Highway, there are a couple nice waterfalls, Sabbaday and Rocky Gorge. Also there are some nice views along the highway, though at this time of year you will need some great weather conditions for decent shots.
There are some great waterfalls around Pinkham Notch. Crystal Cascade and Glen Ellis are nice.
Someone mentioned Flume Gorge. I would skip that if you're interested in serious photography. Too many people and the boardwalk is very narrow it's quite possible to upset people waiting to get by. It's been 20 years since I've been there. I don't even know if they allow tripods.
Drive through Franconia Notch. The view along the highway beside Cannon Mountain is gorgeous. And there is a nice location there called The Basin. Lots of photos there.
I don't wanna hog your thread with pictures so I will try to send some via PM.

Aardvark,
Thanks for the many great suggestions and your pictures were impressive. I'll certainly be chasing some of your suggestions.

I had a second home in Bartlett several years ago and the photo ops are everywhere. Don’t forget
Diana’s bath right off trhe main road and go to Jackson just a few miles away where the river comes right into town and the water falls are all over the place. Finally, drive out toward the Wildcat Sky area and have the river on your left all the way with several great photo opportunities. Of course, the negative is trhat this is one of the most popular areas in New England and the crowds will be great so you will havre to deal with people all around blocking your shots. Good luck, have fun.

Flume Gorge...You have to see it! Even the path up to it is spectacular....Here is just one of the images I shot showing the gorge...

Rich,
Thanks for the Plume Gorge syggestion. A close friend suggested this also - I'll take a tripod, but may not use if too busy there.

We're heading out to the White Mountains Sunday for a week searching out photo ops. I have a book about waterfalls in White Mountains, various maps and suggestions from friends that vacation there.

There is a wealth of knowledge and support within this forum and I welcome any and all suggestions in locating great landscape photo ops. Shooting with D850 with great glass, tripod, etc for stream features, vistas, etc.

Staying in Bartlett, will visit Lake Winnipesaukee, then head to Salem, MA and Martha's Vineyard on way home.

Thanks in advance!
Bob

Jim,
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the low-light image quality gains by moving to the D750. The D750's 2.39x larger pixel size will be an immediate quality improvement.

When I went from a D90 to D600, i was immediately blown away. Buy the D750, upgrade to more FX lenses, and don't look back!

Thanks CHG_CANON for responding to my "dilemma". After seeing Fred's testing, I re-checked my setup and found the error.

My D850, set at 14-bit shows 2.5K with only a 256GB CF card installed - I don't have a 128GB CF card. With only a 128GB SDXC card installed, it shows 1.2K. Of course with no card, "-E-" is showing.

Why your 850 shows 8.1K...I've no clue. In either case, I will not be shooting 1,000+ images in one session and I always transfer files at the end of a shoot...neither card is used as a long term storage device

Fred,
An interesting situation, for sure. So I went back and re-checked my settings and found a setup error - the image quality was set to jpeg normal... fixed that mistake and now it's showing same results as your findings.

Glad that I rechecked settings, but not happy that I sent you and others on a wild goose chase. This really is a great forum of folks so willing to help others.
Thanks so much!

When you were reading your D850 manual, didn't you note the footnote comment regarding the 51.6MB reference on page 362? The note is resolved on page 364: All figures are approximate. File size varies with scene recorded.

I read the manual pages, which caused me concern, as there is a dramatic difference. If others report back approx 8.1k displayed, then I can rest assured that the camera is a non-issue.

But I thank you for taking your time to reference the manual!
