Beautiful! I grew up at 35 West 90th St.; you must be fairly close to that building.

It's an interesting question. When you do a comparison you still know which camera created which image and it's always possible to be swayed by that knowledge. Here's some fun and everyone can play -- a truly blind test. I didn't move the tripod but the cameras all mounted a little higher or lower so there's minor variation. Should be close enough.

I don't want to give too much away but one of those cameras is a FF 20 megapixel camera similar to what you mention above. Maybe you can find what it is you're seeing in one of these photos and point it out to us. Or just sort the images to their price rank as in the cheaper cameras you mentioned. I won't say it's the FF 20 megapixel camera but one of those is a $6000.00 camera and the others not so much.

I'm curious if you see something that makes one of them stand out.

#2 is in focus, at least the books and the can next to them are. The others are a bit off. Otherwise I can't see the difference.

In the spirit of critique:
1) The colors and composition in the horizontal format are great. Unfortunately the shot isn't very sharp.
2) This HDR was wildly successful. It looks like you're using some crazy polarizing filter or IR film, but the total effect is great.
3) My favorite. The composition and colors are perfect. The exposure is *maybe* a little dark, but it really contributes to a late-afternoon atmosphere.
4) Underexposed. I think there's too much going on between the sky, trees and corn; it would work better to choose one of those e.g., get up really close to the corn with your wide angle, or zoom in to the distant trees.
5) Cool B&W. The placement of the fence is right on.
6)Colors are nice, if a tad underexposed. In terms of composition, it misses the mark a bit for me. I think you could have gotten closer to the red tree in the foreground, emphasizing its colors and also filling up the frame with the tall tree behind it.
7 & 8) Really did not like the HDR effect here. It hasn't done anything for the photos other than give the sky an incongruous color.
9) This turned out very nicely, but I don't know what HDR is bringing to the party. It would be interesting to see what happens to the sky in a non-HDR shot if you keep the exposure of the barn and field as it is.
10) Great composition and exposure. Did you use auto white-balance by any chance? Seems to me that the clouds could have had more of a reddish tone at that time of day.

I would have been happy to have taken any of 'em!

Over here, a "médiocre" D750 is 445 € at mpb.com, a very reputable company. It's not going to be pretty, but at that price, who cares? Dollar equivalent must be about the same in the U.S.

Well this thread has prematurely gone off the rails, way off into zoom lens land. The illiterate UHH lemming herd has swarmed in a bit earlier than usual.

Usually a thread can get through page three more or less intact. Who gives a ratzazz about the useless info that a hord of lemmings all buy the same zooms to all take the same pictures ? Is that news ?? Is it ideas ??

Apparently they all like seeing their gear inventory lists posted for each other. I spoze thaz how they check to make sure everyone toes the party line.

Uh, even the OP couldn't avoid mentioning the zoom lenses he carries in his prime lens kit...

As someone who also casually carries a kit of about two primes (+/-) I would remind you that “better” is hardly barely hinted at by DXO charts and reports. “Better” is about results, not optical technology. The user interaction with prime lenses, and with the scene or subject, is different than with zoom lenses.

To go a step further, some will use primes ... especial non-AF versions ... with a compact LV camera. This further alters the user interaction as compared to an SLR with a zoom. It’s a different working experience, and for some it’s an improved working experience. But only for some.

Improved experience tends to yield improved results. THAT is the sense in which these prime-only kits can be “better”. And acoarst it shows in the results. Such kits are only better for certain users. Definitely not for all.

I didn't specify "better," merely using it in whatever sense the OP meant for results that were pleasing to him. I suppose it's not really a question in his mind, but since he mentions several lens that I know are excellent and sometimes carries all of them, that did reinforce the question in mine.

Much talk goes around about a one lens walk around rig.

Although I do have one with a NIKKOR 18-200, any 11:1 zoom has compromises. This setup is fine for snapshots, zoos and the like ... but when I do more serious work, here is my walk around ‘HUMAN CAMERA BAG’ setup.

First off, use a DOMKE PHOTOGS VEST for warmer weather and their jacket for cooler weather. With plenty of large pockets and awesome weight distribution these allow easy carrying of multiple primes.

DSLR - NIKON D7200 with MB-D15 grip. Easy vertical shots, plenty of battery power and light enough all things considered.

TELEPHOTO - NIKKOR 180 AF-D 2.8. Fast, razor sharp, very light for a 270 FF equivalent. Great for indoor and outdoor sports and adequate for birding and most wildlife.

MEDIUM TELEPHOTO - NIKKOR 85 AF-D 2.8D. Same as the 180 other than shorter, so birding is mostly out.

SHORT TELEPHOTO: NIKKOR 50 1.8 AFD. Toted for the odd portrait. Great museum lens.

‘NORMAL’ LENS: NIKKOR 35 1.8 AFS.

LANDSCAPE: NIKKOR 10-20 AFP. I know it’s a zoom but it’s tiny, light, sharp and quite versatile.

EXTRAS: A few CPLs, occasionally NIKON 10X50 binoculars.

OPTIONAL: A NIKKOR 28-105 AFD MICRO in place of the 50 if I anticipate some closeup opportunities.

I own some of these lenses, or older versions of them, and I confirm that they are excellent in the context of both APS-C and full frame. the 180mm 2.8 is a classic; I've taken some of my most memorable photos with it. But that 28-105 there... that's displaced my 50mm 1.8, currently sitting on the shelf. Do you really find that the primes are so much better that you wouldn't walk around with just the 10-20, 28-105, and 180?

I couldn't read the NY Daily News article in Europe, so instead had to read the report on it on the PetaPixel site. I'm not surprised by the reaction here, and as an American citizen and native New Yorker I basically agree. But as a French citizen, this line jumped out at me: "any act of photographing someone in a degrading, violative way without her consent in public is wrong." Now, the author goes off the deep end of feminist rhetoric after that, but think hard; do you really disagree with that statement? In our (French) Constitution we have language based on the "Rights of Men and Citizens" document from the French Revolution which protect private life and the dignity of individuals, even in public. I don't think that's a bad thing, even it constrains my street photography. We also have a strong right to self-expression, so things tend to balance out.

My long term plan if and when things get too heavy it to keep the cameras and adjust what lenses I use. I've already added a 24-120mm f/4 for those all day outings when I just don't want to carry a 24-70mm f/2.8. Let's face it...for a lot of what we photograph, the requirement to use the highest tier premium lens is only in our minds. I've identified a path to reduce lens weight while keeping good performance and the camera, which, regardless of what gets said here, is the most important part of the equation. If I ever find myself reduced to just a D500 or D850 and just a 35mm or a 50mm or an 85mm, I'll still be many miles farther along in capability from where I spent many years with a Minolta DSLR, and it delivered many, many excellent images over many years.

Especially with the cropping possibilities of the D850. I recently took only the D800 and a 50mm to Paris for two days due to space constraints on the train. Compact, not super heavy, happily cropped away in postprocessing. It would have been nice to have a zoom to get this shot, but I'm satisfied with the result.
