@nywebb... you have made it clear that many pilots are anti FAA. When most of these airman get themselves into a jam, the first person they call is an FAA Air Traffic Controller to save their a**. Many times each day the hard working Controllers of the FAA's Air Traffic Services help pilots that are lost, encountering severe weather, minimum/emergency fuel situations, or just plain screwed up. I'll agree 100% that most other divsions of the FAA are as useless as most government agencies, but the FAA and Federal Contract Controllers are a dedicated group of folks!

No one ever said controllers are bad people. I have close friends that are controllers. Employees of the FAA are code enforcers, ATC helps us out...that's why they're there, and most are good people. But I can see as a pilot I'm in the minority, soooo....I'm outta here.

Yes ! We have those posted all over the airport ! AOPA sends a kit !! We have had people call the local police upon seeing someone on airport property....one of them turned out to be the person that broke into the maintenance hanger and stole some tools !

I recently visited a small municipal (public) airport and was taking pictures of small planes parked on the ramp. Through a fence I may add. The airport manager approached me and asked me to stop shooting. I do know that you can enter the aircraft's tail number and Google will provide various registration/ownership information. It was no big deal and I did not want to start an argument so I stopped shooting. Was the guy out of bounds and I should have just ignored him?

I have to agree with most everyone else. If you're on public property you may photograph everything within sight.

I agree with you Willy...although I don't think the OP was talking about legalities. We just don't like the FAA, and seeing as how they always carry cameras....for evidence, people may think anyone with a camera is from the FAA...or tax collector !! But snap away....it's flattering to me when someone wants to snap me or stuff around me !

So there is a pretty large photography/hobby shop in my town. I went there to price a few lenses for my Nikon D90. The sales guy asked what I was buying them for and I told him I wanted a faster lens for the weddings I shoot. He asked what camera I used (we had already tried several lenses on my D90) I told him "This one" He kind of looked at it in distaste and pretty much treated me like a hack after that. What happened to, it's the person not the camera?
I know there are much higher end cameras then mine but so far I have yet to have a bride unhappy with the quality of my work. I get nearly all my business from word of mouth but this guy made me feel bad because of my "inferior" equipment.
Of course I ended up buying nothing from him.

When I had my camera repair business I had a customer who was at the "War College" at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, AL. He was in a branch of military out of Saudi Arabia. (Not that it matters) He had dropped off a Minolta Maxxum for a shutter repair. On the work ticket in the estimate section I had written in $65 which was much less than Minolta would have charged. Also I had his camera ready in two days instead of six weeks as was the usual factory turn around. He comes in to pick up the camera and when I said it would be $65 he said "No No No" we can do better than that. I guess business is different over there. My phone is ringing like crazy and I had cameras lined up for repair. I finally told the guy to give me $45 and never darken my doorway again. He thought I was rude and insulting.

He wanted to pay you more than the $65 and you told him to never darken your door again? You are a strange man. A man was mailing a book to me and he said it was $25 for the mail so I send him $30. He said thanks for the extra. He did not get rude eventhough he was busy and had many free books to mail to people. Only in America, and this is true, it happened on this forum UHH.

Read the post again....he told the guy $65.00.....the guy said "we can do better than that"....meaning he wanted to pay less !!! I've heard that for 40 years in the car business !!! Chop artists !!!!

That you hang around car thiefs does not make everyone a car thief. I paid $30 when $25 was requested because I was happy with the deal and wanted to pay a little extra. Lat night I had dinner and the bill was $7 I paid more, it is called tip because I liked the service. Stop hanging around chop shops and become an honest man and your outlook will improve.
Actually, what some people need is an optorectomy. I can explain what that means if asked to do so.

Are you some kinda wise ass ??? The car business was my career all my life ! Did you ever buy a new car and pay sticker price ? Ever buy a used car and pay asking price ? Don't know where you came up with "chop shop".....a chop artist is a wholesaler who won't pay asking price ! Leaving a tip for a dinner is A LITTLE different than paying a grand more for a car than the rest of the buying public !!!! Calling my friends and business clients thiefs is a nice thing....especially on Christmas !! Sorry to bother you today God !! Asshole !

Some people are so full of anger, even on Christmas. Yes I have paid over sticker price when a new model came out and you had to order it way ahead before delivery. Keep your anger in check. This is not the place nor the time for it.

Access depends on the type of airport. Ours which has four airlines serving it and restricts all access to airline passengers and those employees of the local fixed base operators (FBO) and pilots who have been authorized access. Otherwise you take pictures through the fence.

I'm based at a very small, un-fenced rural airport. Since 9/11, the FAA as well as all pilot organizations have instituted "Airport Watch". If we see someone we don't know, we approach them and ask what they're doing. If they're just taking pics, that's fine. The thing to do is to let someone know. We've had camera clubs walk all over the airport snapping pics without telling someone ! Last year I had a girl standing in the middle of the runway trying to get pics.....seriously ??? Know how hard it is to avoid hitting someone or something when you're landing ?? Airport owners and managers, especially those at airports with no fences, pay HUGE liability premiums !! And the courts always side with the individual that got injured ! When the camera clubs ask, we always encourage them ! However, we have to watch them to make sure they stay out of a potentially dangerous situation ! Taking shots at airports is fine, and encouraged, as a lot of us pilots have a camera in our hands....but respect the people who use the airport and ask first !

I'm a pilot and spend a lot of time in the small rural airports here and in Florida. Since 9/11, everyone has been on guard. Considering that most small General Aviation planes are in the $100,000.00 neighborhood and up, and the airport charges good money to be able to park a plane there, owners expect security. Also, most "plane" people are very leery of the FAA....they're a sneaky outfit ! Also, many people are VERY anti-airplane....we've had people at my airport stir up trouble over the years complaining of noise. Never mind that they built their $500,000.00 homes next to the airport AFTER the airport had been there for years !! It's just a fact that everyone is on their guard these days !!
