I have been collecting equipment all my adult life it seems. I have been very tardy in letting much go. I find I need to do so at this stage of my life -- 74 my next birthday! I want to get down to everything in one or two bags. I have sold on here before with no complaints. I treat all my equipment like babies! Everything I will be listing will be in very good to excellent shape with some items the same as new. Watch for my listings. I will price items very attractively and do not wish to entertain lowball offers.

I will be listing the items over the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for looking. I will do all transactions through PM messages.

I bought one about three years ago. Loved the camera for all the reasons that you mentioned. Then one sad, sadly, it would not power up. I'm not sure what the actual problem is; but the flimsy plastic pieces in the battery holder broke and I don't think the batteries are making contact the way they should. I've been thinking about replacing the battery grip; but I have the Nikon F3, F100 and F5. I actually prefer any of these cameras to the F4; but I'm sure I'll get it repaired or replaced one of these days just because it is such a marvelous beast and it is the last of the "all button and dials" Nikons.

My favorite is my F5. The dog got caught in the strap, and it fell on him. Now I need a new dog.

I never seem to have good dreams, but I thought this bad one sort of interesting. On Tuesday night, I'm going to be taking pictures of a radio show being done in a theater. There will be an audience, and I'll be up on the stage with the performers. I didn't think much of it till yesterday, when I realized that I'd be up there in front of an audience.

Last night, I dreamt that I was taking pictures at an event, and nothing went right. Odd. I'm really not concerned about aiming and pushing the button, so I don't know why I had that dream. I'll bring two cameras, both with dual card slots. If the cast gives me permission to post the pictures here, I will.

I shoot a lot of live performances. The best position is stage front (left/right is good), row three through five. The performance is for the people in front of the stage. If you are going to be that close to the performance, have you considered a wide angle lens?

Does anyone use a vest for their photography? If so, what brand and why? I've thought about purchasing one for years, and I'm not getting any younger. I wonder if it would be better for these old hips.

YES, it called "Newswear Documentary Chestvest" At B&H for $115.00
very good quality, waterproof, adjustable. It's amazing how much gear you can carry comfortably. Walking to good birding locations, some distance from the car. I carried two DSLR bodies a flash, batteries for all three, 70-200 mm lens, 300-600 mm lens. my lunch, phone, rain gear (which I did need). Tripod on my shoulder for over half a mile, with no problem.

For "Ripley's Believe it or not"---light meters now for $350. list $500.00?

Every photographer should have a light meter, for both reflected and incident readings. I have always used Weston meters as did Ansel Adams. I bought my first Weston in probably 1954 and Weston was already on version Weston Master II. I now have a number of them including Western Master, Master II and Master III. I find little difference. I also have the clamp on incident reading light cone that make Weston read both forms of light in high and low ranges, both incident and reflected ligh.

Tonight from B&H email advertisement most of you have also received.

Does that actually mean the list for a Sektonic--70th aniverary is $500.00--(or $350?)--?

This is not meant to be a criticism of human judges. But judging photo contests, or any event, different judges will award more or less for different criteria. We see this in judged athletic events where there can be a considerable spread of points from multiple judges.

Sometimes I look at photo contest results and I like one of the runner ups better than the winners. Of course I’m not an expert judge and I’m not privy to the criteria the judges used, but I know what I like and I can see inconsistency if it exists.

It is only natural for human preferences and biases and even politics, to creep in when humans are judging contests.

Computers as we know are devoid of emotion, and when given proper programming they are very good at quantifying large amounts of data and comparing it objectively to criteria.

My question:
How long will it be before AI replaces or at least supplements humans In judging photo contests?

I have been a judge of photography; for international salons, national salons, and local camera clubs for at least 15 years. There is a criteria we have to follow. starting; the class of the photographer (beginner, intermediate, advanced) and the subject (creative, wildlife/ nature, portrait, ect). Most judges are selected for one two categories. Then I have to consider how the club/ organization want me to classify the images (1st 2nd 3rd some have other rankings).
All this information is given (or should be) in the judges instructions. The judge is usually chosen by his experience in photography, and previous judging experience With all this considered, the judge picks what he likes. And is sometimes overruled, for unknown reasons.
Especially in international competitions. AI will never be able to do this, the variables are endless, and each competition has it's own complications.

I am shifting much of my gear from F mount to Z mount Nikon so duplicate or infrequently used gear is being offered for sale in lieu of selling it to B&H at trade in value. What I call five special purpose lenses are offered for sale here. All are in like new condition, clear of inclusions with defect free glass. One hard case exhibits surface crazing as noted. I will pay shipping within the continental US. Preferred payment is through PayPal. All of this is fine gear and I hope some of you can benefit from this.

A professional photographer friend of mine stored his original files on thumb drives. My recommendation to him was to at least put them on a DVD/CD for safer keeping because all it takes is one errant static electrical charge or magnetic field to screw his thumb drive up and lose his photos.

Why are people willing to gamble with their profession?

Discuss. :0)

I do small product advertising and architectural for selective clients. Many times a client has contacted me, and requested a previous image or an adjustment. My image files are quite large, and a reliable storage system was a must. I use a Raid 5 system. in a server connected to my computer, there are five, five terabyte hard drives. All with the same information. If one should fail, I replace it. And all the same information is automatically added to the new drive. I have found this to be very reliable.

I tried the Nikon software (the latest is NX Studio) several times and never liked it, mostly since there are no layers and masking is almost non-existent. So I didn't see any use for it. I've been converting raw files (and processing) in Affinity Photo (AP) and prior to using AP I did the same in Photoshop. My latest processing was to first convert raw files in either DxO Pure Raw or Topaz DeNoise AI and then process in AP.

One of our UHH members sent me a PM indicating that some of my images lacked detail - he was correct. I spent hours trying to figure out what I did wrong and in the process found other images that lacked detail. The only process that removed detail was de-noising. I tried different settings in Topaz and in DxO with no improvement. Then I had an epiphany - I downloaded the latest version of Nikon's NX Studio (free) and converted one of the raw files into the Nikon TIF format (no adjustments made, just conversion) and took the TIF into Affinity Photo. WOW - no loss of detail and minimal noise which is easily adjusted in AP. Then I did the same processing as I had done in AF and the results are so much better. I then used this same procedure to many other photos and got similarly improved results.

NX Studio can batch convert, and send any converted TIF file directly to your post-processing program of choice - it's easy to figure out how - so no need to save the TIF file.

Give it a try and you'll change how you process as I have. I will no longer use either DxO Pure Raw or Topaz DeNoise.

In my quest for high quality images, I only shoot RAW (Nikon). To convert these images to TIFFS or DNG files, to high quality 16 x 20 prints or larger. I use Adobe Negative Converter/(AKA) Adobe DNG Converter. it's free from Adobe and works very well.

The Intrepid 4x5 sheet film camera, made in England, using using 3D printing technology along with other aluminium/ wood or heavy duty plastic parts, https://intrepidcamera.co.uk/
Cameras of this format are still, very expensive and heavy. This Intrepid, is light affordable ($500.00 avg). And has sparked some interest in many serious old school film photographers.
I'm sure someone here, has purchased and used this camera. I am interested in purchasing one, but I would like to know more information on acquiring a lens , and how the camera holds up with frequent use. And any other information you think is useful.

In many of the posts when the discussion is mirror vs mirrorless, I see the statement “mirrorless isn’t for everyone”. I’m am probably the antithesis of a professional photographer so I don’t really understand the statement. I see folks on here talking about shooting wildlife, sports, portraits, landscape etc with mirrorless. What are the downsides of mirrorless other than those who have invested in Mirrored systems don’t want to change…which is understandable. I’m not trying to open a can of here…just curious as to what some of you fine folks think. Thanks!

I have an investment in Nikon bodies (3) and various lens zoom and primes. That work well in my home studio, and other places as a working pro. I also use mirrorless (lumix/Panasonic). I also do 35 mm film and 2.25. it's all the same, light exposed to a light sensitive surfaces, using the exposure triangle. Each one has its own unique advantages over the others.
