Has anyone had any exposure to the new olympus camera? Does anyone here use the OMD EM1 Mar II? What is your opinion of this system. Seems they kept the same 20mp sensor, but added alot of bells and whistles. Wondering what people think to the micro 4/3rds system of olympus in reference to resolution, usability etc....

I do have the OM-D EM1 mark ii. It's a remarkable camera system. I am never been disappointed in my results. I won't be upgrading (right now) to the mark iii. Only because The mark ii covers my needs very well and also I just bought the em5 mark iii (upgrading from my em5 mark ii). I use that camera more because I prefer the smaller footprint (lighter, smaller) carry camera. Pro work or major events I use the em1 mark ii.
Street camera I tend to lean more towards the em10 mark iii. If it were my first adventure into Olympus, I wanted the one that does it all I would buy the em1 mark iii. The x1 engine, with hand held high res. and pro capture are enough. Humble opinion is that Olympus is correcting there mistake in making the x1 to big. Now same power in a smaller camera (keeping it with in the MFT tradition). Hope this helps. Good luck happy shooting :):

for some reason, my first posting on this topic did not include the photo. Try again!

I like taking photos of classis autos in the junkyard.
My family had a Buick just like this. As an early "teener", I tried "scratching off" in the dirt in front of my grandparents house in the country: barely rippled the sand. :-)
Mom would not accept a car if it wasn't a Buick. Dad had to return as beautiful Chevy 2 dr hardtop, and buy another Buick.

Nice Capture. My dad was a Buick fan. Brought back memories. My favorite was his 53 Road Master Convertible (What a Tank). Anyway, thanks for sharing

Congrats on the new camera, Frankie! Your pic looks good.

I have the EM10 MII. I'm looking forward to hearing how you like the new gear. What was your previous?

Thanks Linda, let me share a little of that with you now. First I do have like one of each of all the OMD cameras except the X1. My go to carry camera was always me em10 mark ii. Always great results, easy to carry, on board flash, I am a real fan of the tilt screen (you know the drill). It was the one camera I thought I could never give up.
when they announced the em5 mark iii I started looking at the specs. Kind of referring to it as a baby EM1 mark ii. I started looking at the specs (they seemed to be taking a lot out) That was in the EM5 mark ii which I think is (was) the best thought out MFT Olympus ever built. The EM5 mark ii, even when you added the extra battery grip stayed light weight, small and fully packed with features Including High Res.
The mark iii was not gonna offer that grip (quandary). If they had offered the mark iii with a tilt screen I would have been first in line to pre-order (that wasn't gonna happen).
Was thinking (not always a good idea for me), maybe I should buy another em10 mark ii before they totally stop making them. Also, started looking at the specs on the em10 mark iii. Stated thinking that the em5 mark iii was really a em10 mark iii on steroids (not a baby em1 mark ii).
Finally decided and bought the em10 mark iii (silver), haven't had a silver body since 1967.
The advantages:
1. The new engine (faster processing, faster focusing, way better tracking) easily out matches my 10 ii
2. 4K video, 120 fps slow mo video
3. OLED evf (really prefer that) maybe biased (I worked a little on the concept in the 90's at Kodak)
4. 121 focus points
Disadvantages: (not as significant as I thought at first)
1. The more stream lined menu system reduces the amount of customization you can do.
(that said the defaults are appropriate good choices and there are work arounds)
2. The AP section is mostly not well engineered (my opinion) but the old methods still available.
3. When not in movie mode you can only video in the default HD
My new go to carry camera (my son now has my em10 mark ii.
you can buy It for half the price of the em5 mark ii (you give up weather sealing and phase detect.
I will say that silver body is pretty, immediately got attention and comments by passerby peeps. Not a great choice for street photography (So I bought a black body one too). Both together price lower the em5 mark iii
SO why the em5 mark iii?
I always new I would buy this after the price started dropping (it came earlier than I thought and plus I had some coupons.
PLUS: Faster processing engine, Phase and contrast detect focus, Hi res, Pro mode, 30 frames PS silent,
the longer range in the OLED evf less clipping if you ware glasses, small less bulky than my em1 mark ii.
Sorry, this is a really long reply but on the bright side I did not tell you everything I wanted too

Beautiful shot of your pet succulent, Frankie! Looks like it could be an aloe.

thanks.... I'm not sure. The leaves don't look same as the aloe that is in the yard. Remember, last year or maybe the year before. I posted a picture of my aloe plant which had grown this tall seed stalk in the center. You commented you did not know they did that. Anyway, the leaves on that are different. Maybe a slightly different variety. I will do some home work and try to identify it. I am kinda curious myself. Side Note: that aloe plant has started growing that center stalk again. If it gets interesting I will post it.
I just looked at the clock. It's like 7:30 AM and I am chatting about Aloe. I have only had one sip of my morning coffee and I am at least an hour early from even being out of bed. It's gonna be an interesting day. Anyways, Good Morning and enjoy your day :)

Some pretty neat quack quack's. Your Good. Like that you like really know what they are. When I went to Duck identification class they never mentioned these but I do know Mergansers and puddle ducks :( Your artistry is always so good. I suppose you also did this hand held :) I'll just keep working at it. thanks and enjoy the day.

Sorting last years photos and thought I would share a few.

Tradescantia - "Spiderworts" - comprises about 75 species, all from the New World, occurring from Canada to Argentina. They are in the Spiderwort family - Commelinacea and 26 species are native to the US. The genus is named for English botanist John Tradescant the Younger, who made several trips to Virginia and took specimens of Tradescantia virginiana to England way back in 1629.

Here are photos of the two that are native to Michigan. The first photo is of Virginia spiderwort - Tradescantia virginiana. It is rare here, and some of the plants we encounter may be garden escapes, but it is common across the eastern US. The second image is Ohio spiderwort - Tradescantia ohiensis. That is fairly common here and is also common across the eastern US.

I am using the bark stuff and do not care for it. What do you use please?

LOL... I wish I had a good answer for you. With the original 3 plants I continued with the original potting material that came with the plants. Just added water after the blooms were gone. I did cut the stems down as they turned brown and looked dead. What was left bloomed again. Then all of the stems seemed to dry up and the root systems seemed to be getting pretty crowded. So after doing a little more home work. Cut the stems off at the and repotted with the large bark stuff. Did not have much success with stem growth. Out of what I have left One is in the original mix (came with the plant) the other is in the large bark mix). The one that grew the new stem is with the original potting stuff. Seems to be a mix of small bark and some moss. I been looking on Amazon and found some mixes that look more to my liking. Have not tried anything yet. I don't live in the and area that has a lot of people dedicated to growing orchids. You may want to check and see it there are any orchid enthusiasts or clubs in your area that can help. There are several videos on YouTube none so far have been straight forward and simple. I did learn some of the moss stuff (if you don't ware glove can give you a rash),,, more good news right? Keep me posted :) have a great day.

Frankie, For the first time I am trying orchids. Everyone seems to say they are easy to grow-perhaps once you get the hang of it and they are happy in the growing spot. Mine have new growth, the air roots I think. Do you let them hang over pot and just run? Anxious for yours to get those new blooms.

Hi, Like I said I am kinda shot gunning my adventure with orchids. When I started reading about care and maintenance of Orchids, I began to realize how wonderful my children were and so easy to care for compared to Orchids :( like sterilizing any cutting tools and the complexity and how many kinds of potting material choices for re-potting (hint don't use that large bark stuff). I just read about those air root thingy's and it says to let em fly (apparently the catch good stuff in the air for your Orchids). Who knew. I was stuffing em into the pot before cause they were called roots. I kinda just add water about once a week and let them drain, then stick em back in the decorative outer pot like thingy. I hear many people just put in a couple of ice cubes every 4 or 5 days and just let them melt in the pot (and that takes care of it). Well I thought about my children again, thought it just would not be right to just drop ice on em every once in a while. So I use warm water from the tap. Ain't I a good Dad :) Good Luck. My Bud's are a bit bigger today, so stay tuned and thanks for taking a look.

Good luck with the orchid. Is it the same plant you photographed back in April?

Mike

Probably, not exactly sure I had three different plants the other was a green orchid one purple and of course the one you looked at from April. When I lost the stem systems I cut them back and replanted. I still have two and only one has a stem. The other is waiting I think. the leafing looks the same on both. So I just have to wait and see. THANKS
