They are calcium deposits built up from minerals in the water bubbling up from lake floor. They are formed underwater and wouldn't be visible today if the lake level hadn't been lowered by LA Water diverting the streams that feed the lake.

Thanks for that. I was aware of the history and process but must have forgotten the deposits had a name.

I just realized you answered my camera question earlier. So never mind but thanks anyway.

[quote=Mi630]The bald eagle population around here has been way down this year.
The first two seem to be rare angle of an eagle in flight - beautiful. Is that a camera mounted on the bird's back?
Thanks.

The Tufa's.

Nice work Mike. Brings back memories of my last time there the first week of December, 2013 and I was mesmerized with the place. My buddy and I were the ONLY humans in sight and, while being one of the loneliest and haunting locales I've ever seen, Mono was also amongst the most beautiful too. Took around 500 shots over 4 - 5 hours of bone-chilling wandering, eg. my avatar. (I joined UHH shortly after that trip.)
So thanks much for the memories. Great shots!
Oh yeah, I don't remember anything about "the Tufas". What are they?

Good boy! Call it what you will; Coydog, Eastern Coyote, or Coymolf. Up close and personal, Taken in East Lyme Ct. Ecologist and evolutionary biologist Javier Monzón analyzed the DNA of eastern coyotes and found the genes contain all three canids — dog, wolf, and coyote. According to Monzón’s research, about 64% of the eastern coyote’s genome is coyote (Canis latrans), 13% gray wolf (Canis lupus), 13% Eastern wolf (Canis lycaon), and 10% dog (Canis familiaris).

I don't know what to call the critter but I call the image spectacular, gorgeous, unbelievable. Please share the details and circumstances, especially the lens used.
Thanks

Thanks, Raz Theo! I have to rest the lens on something as it is too heavy for me to keep it still. These were taken from a car window. A real drawback for me, but luckily we have several great auto-tours around here. I love the lens, it is amazing, otherwise.

They have returned in full force and I love them! They aren't spooked easily and will pose for you for as long as you need. I wish they stayed here year-long but our climate is not to their liking (nor mine, either.)

Katy, you sure put that 200-500 to good use. Beautiful shots of a beautiful bird. Are these handheld?
Thanks

Shot on Cape Cod earlier this month, near Truro. I've played around for a long time post processing, preparing it for printing. I think I'm done, but am interested in your comments

It's beautiful, really nicely done. The tones are very dramatic. However, at first, certain "wispy" elements of the image seem soft, out of focus (like the left edge of the path at the top), but the download disproves that. Sharp.
Thanks for sharing.

My absolute favorite breed - beautiful dog!!

Awesome animal, equally spectacular shot - and different angle. I love it.
Several years ago I was forced to give up my last one, for a variety of reasons, and learned recently that Keno had retired from a police dept. in Illinois. Awesome animal too.

Really a stunning picture, and the download even more so. The sign on the pier is clearly foretelling: "No Lifeguard on Duty".
No kidding. Thanks.

In Cordova (MD), at the Triple Creek Winery. This was the very end of the day.

What a great exposure. Beautiful shot. As well captured as any I've seen, especially at night.
Thanks.
