Thanks everyone for your help!!

The reason I want to restore the operating system is to get a better salvage price. The cost new was around 1800.00 and I'd like to get some of that back. It is a 15 inch computer that looks good and worked fine. Without the OS I don't have access to the computer specs that a potential buyer might want to know. It's about 6 years old with a SS drive.

To the person that wondered how I managed to erase the OS - valid question. I hit the wrong choice when I was removing the data. It was an Oh sh_ t moment seconds later but by then too late. I know what I know for photography purposes but my general computer skills are basic.

While I was getting my computer ready for sale, it slipped off my lap and hit the wood floor damaging the screen. The result is banding on the side and bottom leaving the screen about 30 % unusable. But wait, it gets better. Then I was removing all personal data from the screen and wiped out the operating system by accident. I looked at DIY information for restoring the operating system but I couldn't get it to work.
My plan is to sell the computer as salvage but I would like to restore the operating system first if possible.
Can anyone help with simple instructions?

The nearest Apple store is about 170 miles away.

PS- this is what I have done:
I turned the computer on and tried the recommended combination of keys to start the process without results
I researched U-tube videos but the ones that might have been helpful were of poor audio and video quality making it very difficult to follow
I took it to Best Buy but mostly what they wanted to do was sell me their 200.00 maintenance plan and estimated $400-500 to repair it when all I wanted was them to re install the operating system- not replace the screen.

Can you reconsider where to place the fence? Maybe in a side yard instead of in your view?

I've had luck finding specific, hard to find lenses through Best Buy, Samys and Bedford when the 2 major go-to places can't get it in. Just make sure you really want the lens before buying from Best Buy as they have a restock fee if you get it and change your mind. I bought the lens in question (and extender) when it first came out and use it a lot. I use it for birds closer in and general use. It has been a good, light weight, easy to manage alternative to the Fuji 100-400 mm lens which I sold shortly after getting the 70-300 mm lens. The extender works well with the lens. I found that the extender on the 100-400 mm lens really slowed down focus to the point that I ended up not using it.

I see no need to get political about this post and have it sent to The Attic.

I had never heard the term "excess deaths" before, but Dr. Campbell (in England) used that term about statistics in England.

Yesterday, I saw an article in the Washington Post about excess deaths in the US during the pandemic. Over 910,000 people died from Covid, but the excess deaths totaled over 1,000,000, and they can be attributed to the pandemic. I don't mean someone who fell down the stairs or got hit by a car, but many people died as a result of Covid without getting the disease.

You should be able to read this article from a Google search without a subscription. As a test, I sent it to a friend, and he could read it.

Interesting- excess deaths is one way of calculating loss of life from Covid since actual record keeping was inaccurate to say the least. As for the shut down, it was very weird not seeing another car as I drove down a major route outside of Salem, Oregon. Felt like the Twilight Zone. I kept thinking the Highway Patrol was going to stop me for leaving my home.

If you want to purchase a particular piece of equipment, say a new camera, for conspicuous consumption that too is your business. And how can you be conspicuous unless you announce your purchase to others?

Consumption means using up-
Conspicuous Consumption- has a negative implication
I was going to ask for clarification but this subject has probably been exhausted so I won't drag it out by asking.

You owned a Pentax?

If this is meant for me, yes, I have owned new and vintage Pentaxes. No longer have the camera but still have a great landscape lens and one or two Pentax vintages ones. I have the 12-24 mm listed on UHH but no takers so far so I ordered a lens Pentax K to Fuji adapter and I will use it on the Fuji.

This is a great point. I think a lot of people phrase their questions in such a way that they get warped, or irrelevant, or sarcastic answers.

Like a consultative sales person, if I ask, "Tell me about your experiences with ______. What did it do for you? Would you have bought something else, in retrospect? Why does, or doesn't it, meet your needs or expectations? Do you feel good about it? Have you had any negative issues with it?", then I will get more useful answers.

That said, people in general are "innocently ignorant" about things they know nothing about. They may not ask the "right" questions, because they don't know "where the on ramp is" to the topic. I've been there, done that, myself, many times, and been misled.

Sometimes I read questions that are obvious examples of that innocent ignorance. Directly answering the question would obviously take the asker down the wrong path! Sometimes I redirect, and I'm thanked. Other times I redirect, and the OP gets upset with me (or someone else in the forum gets upset with me) for not answering the original question directly.

Frankly, those of us who hang out here a lot do it for fun. We are not paid. The advice is free. It may or may not be useful. Some of us *try* to help. Caveat Emptor!

It's the sarcasm that makes me crazy and adds nothing. Better just to move on. I appreciate all those willing on the forum to share their insight and knowledge and you all know who you are- you are one Burk. I have gotten very valuable information but I have learned to ask selective questions.

Staying abreast of new technology takes guts. Many people get to a point in life where they "give up" on learning. That is a shame and just a admittance of their frail humanity. Others keep trudging on, trying to keep up until their demise. Which is right is only up to the individual, not for others to decide. So far, as far as I am concerned, I'm going to keep on keeping on!

It's easier to stay with what you know than moving on.
Me too.

It's simple; if you want it just go get it. No permission required. After all, for most of us here, this is just a hobby and none of it is required other than for our own enjoyment.

If you ask the forum about their experience with a particular piece of gear then you'll likely get some good information to help with your decision.

However, if you ask the forum "if I should", then be prepared for the forums individualized opinions regarding why you 'should' or 'shouldn't'. And you must also remember that the forum doesn't know your want's, desires, needs or constraints. You'll only get opinions based on their perspective, not yours. For me, the only person qualified to help answer this question is my wife.

It's all about how you ask the question!

You're right. If you can afford another $3000 camera when you already own a $3000 camera that isn't anywhere near 'old' nor 'outdated', there's no reason to ask strangers on the internet for permission to spend your money on unneeded items. Most $3000 cameras are designed to last 10+ years, if not forever.

But, if you know in your heart you're not making a wise choice given your photography needs and personal financial situation, maybe that fear exhibits itself in needing to ask strangers on the internet what they think about the idea. And some strangers might give a candid response to your question, helping you make your own 'right' decision. Others, of course, will happily spend your money as if their own, their 'right' decision that may / may not apply to you.

My point was that if you want new, buy new and if you want old then keep that. Not up to us to decide whether they "should" or "need" to buy new. The most helpful information given is through other's personal use of whatever equipment the poster is inquiring about. There will always be people on the forum that will not be able to make any decision no matter how much information they receive.

The simple fact is that roughly 98% of the members on here (bearing on mind that approximately 86.3% of all statistics are made up on the spot) don't take full advantage of, or cannot use, the full benefit of the cameras they have, should mean nothing whatever.

If you want another camera - or anything else - you need simply to answer a few basic questions:

- why do I want whatever it is? About the only unacceptable answer is that it is a cover, an excuse, hiding from some other deeper phycological darkness, filling a void.

- will I enjoy using it? What will be better? I know in my case, I will rarely take photos that will impress anyone, but I take great pleasure from taking photos using the cameras (plural) I have that are capable of making spectacular images.

- probably the most important one: will this purchase materially affect me or my family in a negative way? If I spend this money, who suffers?

Good answers = full speed ahead!

Let's face it, if only the absolute most competent were "allowed" to buy top class equipment, almost all manufacturers would be out of business. Manufacturing at scale requires appropriate sales volume to keep sales price acceptable.

Very, very few of us will suddenly produce masterpieces because we bought a new camera.

Very few of us will produce masterpieces with or without new equipment but that isn't a reason not to upgrade if one can afford it and wants to. The only unacceptable answer on your list in my opinion is if buying new affects the family negatively. I think forum members want to hear about other's experiences about the equipment they are thinking of buying so that they can draw their own conclusions - if I ask that's what I want to know. Not the age old question of "what will this new equipment do that your (10 year old ) equipment doesn't do"
