That's why I moved to Texas from the Midwest in '92. I won't die shoveling snow. I may be a dried up old lizard from too much sun and heat, but I won't die shoveling snow... Stay warm. Windy and 57 here today, brrr...

Beware of free converters on the web. Lots of viruses and malware out there. On the PC side, VLC is a very good player that will play almost anything. Not sure if there is a comparable app for the iPad. Good luck.

Computer guy here. We've done maybe 100 upgrades now with only a handful of problems. Some older programs or printers may not work or may need updating. It's safe and you can roll it back to the way it was for up to 30 days. On day 31, that option disappears. Good luck!

Woohoo! I love new toys. Getting one in early December during a photo expo here in Austin, hope to get a good discount from the factory reps.

I'm a Nikon guy, but if you go to YouTube and search for something like "Canon back button focus" you'll find more videos than you can watch. Search for "Tony Northrup back button focus" and you'll get a great tutorial in which he uses a Canon. Good luck.

I hope my first self-chosen hair style didn't look this stupid 45 years ago, but I'll bet it did...

Thanks, Jerry. So many "secret" keys, so little time...

Computer guy here. I concur with the external drives. I personally use Carbonite and at this point have 1.4TB out there. It's unlimited, it just takes a while to get large quantities of stuff out there for your initial backup. In the event of a disaster, they can ship you an external drive overnight for a fee or you can prioritize what you want to restore right away, with the rest dribbling in over time. With the latest ransomware attacks scrambling your PC, Mac and external drives, the rolling 30 days they keep of all of your files is your only sure-bet protection anymore. Good luck.

I tried both the Tamron and the Sigma on my D7200 at Precision Camera here in Austin this week. The store is having it's annual Photo Expo Dec 3-4 with factory reps from all major brands and there are usually big enough discounts to overcome the sales tax required of brick and mortar stores. I have a Sigma 150-500 now that I like a lot. The new lens is a little lighter, seemed very sharp at 600mm and works with the USB dock I already have for my Sigma 18-300. I'm leaning towards the Sigma being my early Christmas present to myself. Stay tuned!

I use it 100% of the time on my D7200. AF-C is definitely what you want. OK for stills, but ready for movement. I use the AE/AL button. From the Kindle book, The D7200 Experience "set Custom Setting a4 to AF-ON only, and use Custom Setting f4 to assign the AE-L/AF-L Button to the AF-ON setting (see Figure 193). The a4 setting will tell the camera to remove all autofocusing operation from the Shutter Button and assign it any button set for the AF-ON function. The f4 setting will assign the AF-ON function to the AE-L/AF-L Button. You will then need to press the AE-L/AF-L Button to initiate and lock focus distance in AF-S Autofocus Mode, or to initiate autofocus tracking in AF-C and AF-A modes."

I've had a refurbed Canon SX-50 for $179 dirct from Canon for the last year and it's a great camera. Getting a Nikon P600 for $199 from KEH, the Brown truck should be here Monday. Both are great deals for cameras that were over $400 new and were very good when they were the latest and greatest. They didn't go obsolete just because a newer, bright shiny object is one the scene. Good luck.

Welcome aboard. I'd study what's out there, visit a camera store and hold some candidates in your own hands, discuss here and with others what type of photos you are interested in taking, etc. I have lots of DSLR gear and lenses, but as I get older, the lighter mirrorless gear is looking appealing. I know sometime down the road it will be a necessity. I think I'd start fresh and not worry about Granddad's old equipment. You've already gotten good advice here on buying used or refurbished, your money will go further that way. Most any decent camera from the last 5 years is a good choice. Good luck.

I just gave away my Canon SX-50 on a mission trip to a friend in Kenya whose camera had died. She's a Canon gal and I'm sure will be quite happy with it. As a replacement, I opted for a refurbed Nikon P600 from keh.com for only $199. I grew up on the P90 and P500 and I am getting rid of the culture shock of going back and forth between my D7200 when I have a long lens on it and a Canon for snapshots. You might save a little money and get a very good camera like I did. I also lament no RAW, but everything else is great. You can't go wrong with the P900, I just can't see the extra expense when the P600 was so cool only a short time ago.

Keywording is great - very simple to do, and builds the database so you can locate 1 image out of thousands within 1 second usually....next look at hierarchical keywording, it makes it even easier and quicker ;)

For example, you can set up a WHAT & WHERE type category, then sub categories under each, with additional subcategories....

Example:

CARS
------>CLASSIC
---------------->FORD
---------------->CHEVROLET
---------------->PONTIAC
------>ANTIQUE
---------------->FORD
---------------->CHEVROLET
---------------->PONTIAC

Then when you keyword you simply check off FORD (under CLASSIC) and Lightroom adds the keywords, FORD, CLASSIC, CARS to your image.... and the expansion is pretty much infinite, and can be modified on the fly.

I set mine up with top level topics for WHAT & WHERE, so it is very quick and easy for me to add a ton of keywords based on a couple clicks.

Example from my keyword hierarchy :

Nice example, Don. Most people have a hard time realizing Lightroom is a good database as much as it is an editing program. As a computer guy, I really appreciate how the database can help you find a needle in a haystack if you just take a little extra time upfront. I like your hierarchical concept. My database is flatter, you've given me some food for thought. Thanks...

I succumbed today to a refurbed Nikon P600 for $199 as a backup to my D7200. I gave my refurbed Canon SX-50 to a friend in Kenya this week when her camera died. It was too weird going from Nikon to Canon and back again. The SX-50 is a great camera, but I had a dysfunctional family going. I think it'll be more intuitive to have a Nikon superzoom and a backup. Sad it doesn't shoot RAW, everything else is cool. Now, if that brown truck would hurry up before I have another GAS attack!
