haroldross thanks for the reply, and info, that's the beauty of the Hog, people have the knowledge to put us that don't in the right direction,
as you say the 70x300 is only slightly better than what I have got, so it would be a waste of money buying it, better waiting until I can afford the more expensive L range, or maybe a lens from Sigma or Tamron, if any of there's are OK,, Will do some more research, thanks again Colin

Thanks djtravels for your reply, yes I had thought about the Tamron 18x270 or the sigma 18x250, as they seem to get good reports as a general walk about lens, however the canon 70x300, I think even though it is a bit more expensive, would be a better choice,
will have to have a look on the web,and see what price I can get one for here in Australia, I just might be lucky,

thanks for your prompt reply, and help, oh if only money was not an issue. Colin

G/day from AUS, I have a canon 600d with kit lenses,ie 18x55 and 55x 250, now I find the 18x55 ok but the 55x250 is rather poor at focusing, on scenery shots its OK, but say on birds, well not so good.
can any one on the Hog advise re a better lens, and if possible ,one with a little more reach I have thought of the canon 70x300 which available out here for around $500AD and seems much quicker at focusing,
thank you all ,Colin

thanks for your info , hac chief, I have read a few Lab reports on lenses in the past, and what they find wrong with them under Lab conditions,i dont think most of us would ever notice while out in the real world, thanks again Colin.

can anyone give me a viewpoint on sigma v Tamron, please,

I have a canon 600d with kit lenses,ie 18x55 and 55x 250, and find changing lenses a bit of a pain at times. so am thinking as a carry about lens, a sigma 18x250, or the tamron 18x 270,, might be a good idea

I find the 18x55 I have to be reasonably quick at focusing, but the 55x 25o can be a pain sometimes,as it is inclined to hunt, thanks in anticipation for replies,

Thanks for tha reply Carlysue, I must agree re the plumage of the Tui, when you see them in flight, you would say that they where Black, except for the white around there necks, but if you can see a close up,well its so different,we had very many visits from the Tui, but they always seamed to get behind flowers, and small branches, so getting a reasonable close up as difficult,i just got lucky, glad you enjoyed, Colin

just spent Christmas back in New Zealand visiting our Son, and Daughter, and of course Grand Children, and got these photos of a Tui, which I think is quite beautiful, and a little unusual.
I think that most people will not have seen them before

Thanks Jay Pat, for looking, we go to this area a lot, and never get feed up with it, even in winter when it is very windy, it look good, if anything for me it looks better with the waves crashing on to the beach, and some clouds to give real atmosphere, Colin

Thanks for your reply Dook, as you are not that far from me, if you ever get down into Vic, have a look at Cape Conran, it a photographers dream, good scenery, and the bird life can be very good, as well as the usual sea birds, we have blue wrens, yellow breasted robins, red browed finches, sea eagles ,just to mention a few .the coast is at its best when it is very windy, and with plenty of clouds about, gives atmosphere, Colin

Thanks infocus, I picked that up as soon as I had posted, will have to learn to stand up straight, instead of leaning on a rock while focusing, still as a geriatric I suppose I can be forgiven, colin

oh you know where I am in AUS, where are you? hiding behind the Black Stump??? have a good day colin.

Thanks for the reply Moshe, yes it is a top place, and even in the height of summer it does not get crowded, I thinks on this day there might have been 50 people on the beach, we are so lucky here, as we are far enough away from Melbourne so as not to have many people around ,if the weather gets a bit warmer, ie 35c, I might just go and get wet,
oh also if we go inland from here, we have the Australian bush which is very nice, exept for now as we have 23 bush fires, not good, but that's what we get here in the summer.
