I like the movement in the second one but the outside is overexposed. Can you put the windows from the first one into the steam engine of the second one with layering in Photoshop? Or combine them into an HDR image?

I disagree. At first I thought of doing the same thing (sometimes I'm tempted to tweak too much). However, this photo is NOT about the background (the windows), it about the MACHINE! The 2nd exposure is right-on. Perfect movement and shadow detail on the machine by the slight over-exposure. To heck with the windows.

Thanks for the input

Photoshop elements has a tutorial that shows how to merge two pictures so that the correctly exposed bit (the engine in pic 2) is merged with the correctly exposed background in picture 1. I do not know how difficult it would be with this engine but it is somewhere to start.

You are right thanks

I like # 1 it's clearer especially the windows and background. # 2 shows action but the rest of the picture isn't clear.

Thanks for looking

Of the two, I pick #2 because I can see more detail with the wheel spinning and light coming through.

When you can, please tell what we are looking at.

Neither! Use a Neutral Density (ND) filter, and/or a Circular Polarizing Filter (CPF) to obtain proper outdoor exposure plus blurred moving wheel.

Thanks for giving your opinion and you are right

Just a comment on people asking questions.

It would help no end if people asking questions about what to do at a shoot or for advice could say "what gear they have"

eg "I am doing a portrait/party, what lens/flash do you advise"

Helps if we know what camera you have and what lenses you have already.

Also if asking about what to buy, a "budget" helps people to know what advice to give, cant advise without knowing how much you can afford.

Finally my personal opinion only but do people on the whole need to "hide" their location, default setting, why not say where you are from.

NOT being off hand, just a few suggestions that help get the right answers.

I agree with open disclosure regarding location. But I've learned from one PM that a person was stalked because of very specific small town information. Consider a woman, inviting looking avatar, who casually states in her posting that she likes to shoot the Brooklyn Bridge looking toward Manhatten, on Sunday mornings with her Nikon camera and multiple lenses, etc. Could attract s.o. with malevolent intent. Oh scare mongering, and come on shame but one in a million million, if we all worried abou that, what about facebook and the like where people openly (idiots) give out addresses, account and phone details.

All we are saying is for me DEVON, go on find me :) :) :)

i just watched a video on youtube, where the photographer showed using the kit 18-55 lens to take portraits...and they were great.

as far as another lens, do not be afraid of sigma and tamron. they make some really nice stuff.

i have a friend that has 5 L lenses for his canon 5dmk3....and i have yet to see a good photo from him....so it's not all the equipment.
my buddy is my friend...but he sucks as a photographer and all the money in the world is not going to help him.

check out the shots taken in the sigma and tamron site. the lenses are reasonable and affordable...and you will not be disappointed.
