Which lens?
I shoot a 7d. Normally use 15-85mm. I am wanting to start shooting my kids sports. I have been told about the 70-200mm f2.8. My friend has it and looks great, when I went to the store, the clerk actually suggested to me the 70-200mm f4, she said it has IS and the 2.8 does not. I will be normally taking these sports photos outside so she said I would not need the 2.8. I got the one she suggested, I played with it tonight, it was on the darker side this evening, my ISO had to be higher to let the light in. Pics okay, not great. Not sharp at all, quite a bit of noise when cropped in but on a whole without any cropping they look okay.
Wondering if I made a mistake with this lens? Should I have gotten the 2.8? Why? I can still return this lens and switch it. Will the IS make a huge difference? The lens I use now has IS.
Thanks in advance for your opinions.

IS lenses generally give you near two stops advantage.
I would recomend a ball head or gimbal mount on a tripod.
I shoot a 100-400 lens hand held with IS. It can be challanging to get needle sharp images sans tripod.
On the tripod, turn IS OFF for best results.

I also shoot sporting events. The lens I was using was an f4 at the shortest focal length. As the light faded the lens just didn't perform. I sold and and purchased a 2.8 70-200 with IS. What a difference!!!I also use a monopod. Can you borrow your friend's lens to see the difference?
The 70-200 2.8 can be purchased with or without IS.
I didn't think the 2.8 70-200 had IS?
I can borrow her lens, the 2.8 is quite a bit heavier, right?
I started shooting at 1/500, ISO 1000, f4. Quickly as the light left I had to make changes, this was just my first attempt, want to try to figure it out during practice, so I can take good ones during the game. Oh, also, I could be doing this wrong... I first used the manual select (bracket) focal point, but felt like I was not getting clear on my child, so I played with the AF point expansion (plus shape) and the single point AF.
I had it on AL Servo.
Was any of that wrong? Could be user error. :)

Mine definitely is an IS lens. It's so heavy without handheld shots would be difficult for me to capture. I use AL Servo and the AF expansion also. What time of day were you shooting? Can you post a picture?
I just looked it up, I can't make the IS 2.8 happen, I cant get away with $4,000. on a lens right now, so with that said would the one without IS be better still?

Personally I prefer a 2.8 lens because I find myself in low light situations. If the games I shot were all in the morning or afternoon the f/4 would work well. Most of our games started at 6pm and I quickly lost the light I needed which is why I went to the 2.8.
It was evening, 6:PM, lighting was not great from the get go, but about 1/2 into it, it was way too dark, I kept upping my ISO which has caused way too much noise, I will go try to post a photo that I have not put through Lightroom yet.

IS helps you prevent shake and canon boasts that you can hand hold the lens 2 stops quicker with IS than without. That is great if there is enough light but if you are shooting in lower light, then you need the larger aperture (f2.8) to let more light into the lens just to get the photo. High ISO settings mean noise. Slowing down shutter speeds to capture more light can mean blur. I would try to borrow the f2.8 (or rent it) and give it a try. If that solves the problem, then exchange it.
canon 200mm f2.8L is an awesome prime you may want to look at as well. ($765.00) if money is an issue.
Thanks Wild Bill! What would you buy? I don't think I want a prime 200mm lens, but that price is great!
Basically if I return what I have the e; 70-200mm f4 iS USM, I am looking at $300. For the non IS, more like 1,000. If I get the IS. I have never shot without the IS. I do want to shoot handheld.
OR am I best to stick with what I have? Do you shoot without IS? I called CNon and talked to a guy before buying this one, and he didn't make it seem necessary, he said people often misunderstand "shake" and he made sure, I understood, it was MY shake, rather than the subject.
I do shake, I know I do, especially with that heavy of a lens...
Not sure my husband will let me do $1,000. more... He doesn't understand. :)
