I am looking at buying a Canon Rebel DS6041. Will it give me quality photographs? It will come with a 18-55mm lens as well as a 70-205mm Zoom lens. All other accessories included. I won't be putting money out on it but other wise trading my Laptop for it.

That is the Original Digital Rebel 300D I had one of those and used it for two years (product shot photography). It did okay for my needs. The only reason I sold mine was to get the newer model with live view. About your deal...what brand are the lenses and what condition are they in?. You have seen the stuff in person...right? Once you have lenses upgrading the body is easy.

No doubt about it you can get a lot of camera in either brand. And if you really wanted to you could get adapter rings to use your old lenses on a new camera in manual settings of course.

If you can't set a manual aperture then use the portrait mode. Most cameras have one and it is designed to limit depth of field.

I use Canon's tethering with live view to take product shots for the family jewelry business. I am not familiar with your camera but I take between 40 & 50 shots a day and would pay to have a program if there was no alternative.

Even refrigerated film has a shelf life!

But it gives such interesting effects. I found my father's SX-70 Polaroid after 35 years of storage and it produced a very cool image with the ancient film pack still in it. It was not refrigerated. Where do you think all the retro iPhone hipstamatic images are influenced by? Old film!

Of course I would not use it for anything
BTW I have all my slides and 8mm movies from the 60's to 90's and all still are in good shape. I have lost many digital images over the years.

There is a source for film for your SX-70. The impossible project web site sells new film.

I am looking at adding some filters to my collection for my new Canon 24-105 Macro L ...Curious if you think any brand is truly superior to others? One certainly would think so when you compare the prices of the 77mm Close Up filters I've been looking at and their amazing price differences.

Any thoughts from you would be very much appreciated.

Jeff

I do not think that a macro lens of the caliber that you mention would be enhanced by the additional of another piece of glass between the sensor and the subject if the purpose was to magnify the image. If you need a filter to refine the lighting I would suggest that a polarizer would be the most beneficial. In my experience with purchasing polarizers the cheaper ones do not work.

I would encourage you to do a little leg work looking at the cameras available at retail locations near you. For the most part camera stores have vanished and the personnel at stores like Best Buy and Costco know very little and are not the most motivated to provide assistance. That being said, I would consider the following two factors:

1. How do you plan to use the camera? (and how often?) If you are enthusiastic about taking photographs as opposed to snapshots during vactions then you may wish to invest in better than "Kit" lenses and a better than entry level camera. If you are going to use your new camera to capture memoriies (snapshots). Then a value-priced camera may be your best bet. Most produce more than acceptable results.

2. Your current camera equipment. If you own Nikon or Canon or Minolta AUTOFOCUS lenses then it may behoove you to stick with a compatible brand of digital camera (Sony bought the Minolta dessign patents). If your current equipment is not compatible then start fresh.

dpullum is correct in his observations regaarding brand loyalty. It is human nature to justify ones actions by recuiting new members to a cause (brand). Just make sure that you like the flavor before you drink the Kool-Aid.

Canon and Nikon EQUALLY share roughly 80% of the digital camera market everyone else (regardless of quallty) is an "also-ran". So if you are starting fresh then either of these brands offer a wide variety of models of camera bodies and lenses to choose from. Chooosing a Sony or Pentax may be limiting. When you read the reviews of "customers" on the web keep in mind that an estimated 40% of them written by persons paid to voice their opinion.

One last note on where to buy. The reason there are no camera stores is the same reason there are no book stores...Amazon.com I have bought four cameras and six lenses from Amazon in the past 6 years. Some I have kept and some I have returned under their 30 day return policy. This way I am sure I buy what I like and like what I buy.

I have been shooting Canon EOS since 1988 and switched to digital from in 2005.

I am learning from this site that it depends on what you are shooting....I just bought a Tamron 18-270mm Di II VC PZD Model B008E and I shoot my kids soccer games. This weekend was the first time that I used it and was very pleased with the pictures.

Would you please consider posting some of the shots? I am also interested in the performance of this lens

I would normally bracket a shot of this type a full stop in each direction although, this may have needed more.

A friend of mine said I should look at either the Sigma 70-300 $169 or the Canon 55-250 $198. Does anyone have any experience with those?

The longest lens I currently have is 85mm. I am currently using a T2i and was thinking of getting something longer. I really do mostly studio tabletop product photography so until now I have had no need to get something longer. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.
