There, that will keep you out of trouble.

No kidding. Very imaginative ideas. Thanks, Dick

Hmmm.. That's an interesting idea. I've never seen a toad stool that big in SoCal, but anything is possible. These set designers down here are pretty good...LOL. Thanks

"In the shadows" is the topic for next month's assignment at my camera club. I'm seriously in need of inspiration, as this is a type of photography I had never even thought about before. I'd love to see what some of you might have done with this genre of images. I'm looking forward to seeing what this prolific group has produced to give me some ideas. Thanks in advance, Dick

I also prefer photos 5-7. Two examples:

#1: handheld (but fairly steady) with slow exposure 1/8 sec, f/5, ISO 100

#2: same exposure, but with camera movement

Those are damn good Paul. I thought of trying to photograph a blowing flag, but never got to it. You've inspired me to try again. I'm going to save your message and try to emulate your great success.

Thanks again,
Dick

A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who provided comments, encouragement, education and critical analysis as I learned what slow shutter photography was all about. This is the picture I submitted for the judging this coming week. In my 72 years this is the first time I have ever submitted an image for judging, so I'm going to be most interested in the outcome. This is a "Merit" or "No Merit" judging. Wish me luck. I'll let everyone know how it turns out after the meeting on Wednesday night.
Cheers,
Dick

[quote=rdrechsler] I got a good laugh out of the last response because... quote]

HaHa... I just sold my 47' yacht and I'm 72, so yeah, had to come up with something to do

I've always loved photography, so I'm just stepping it up from my "bridge" camera to a more professional grade. I'm excited. BTW....just canceled the Best Buy offer cuz 42nd Street Camera has it in stock and I don't have to pay sales tax! That's a big savings!

Cheers,
Dick

AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR

Thanks all for the input. I got a good laugh out of the last response because I developed a serious case of GAS. After studying more and reading more I decided to go all in. Yep, a Canon D850. Hard to find by the way. They are selling like hotcakes. In fact, if you look on eBay or Amazon you'll find that people are reselling them for $1000-$2000 above the usual $3296 price. All the usual sources are showing OUT OF STOCK. I think I found one on eBay. With luck, it will be here Tuesday.

For the second lens I bought the AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 ED VR. I think I'll be happy with the FF camera. Watch for some new pics in the near future! Thanks, as always, for all the help!

Definitely #1. The second shot doesn't tell you anything, while the anchor in #1 is quite clear.

That eagle shot grabs your attention. Well done, all of them.

I wouldn't go without a telephoto lens. I've been to Isla Isabela in the Gulf of California and much of the wildlife was at a distance and the long-distance landscape shots and flying "colonies" of birds were amazing. I imagine the Galapagos are much the same. Take the tele...I doubt you'll be sorry.

Would a Nikon FX lens on a DX body (e.g. D7200) provide better images than a comparably sized DX lens?

AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR

I like everything about this lens, with one question. I think I understand that the f/4 on the lens means it holds f4 throughout the entire zoom length. Am I also correct that the lens is still capable of using the full range of f/stops on my camera, a Nikon D850?

I see a whole lot of Nikon AF-S, VR lenses that don't designate whether they are DX or FX. How do you know which they are?
