I am a novice photographer and want to get some photos of the Supermoon this month. I have a Canon SL1 with a ES 75-300 1:4-5.6 lens. What settings, i.e., shutter speed, aperture, should I use to capture the best quality shots?

300mm or less might be all you need. If you zoom in on the moon at 400mm to 800mm then all you have is a nice photo of the moon. What you want to do is find a subject to have with the moon to show the is super size.

Note: Photo by a friend in my club.

Forgive my ignorance. I don't post process with any software. Is there still an advantage to shooting RAW files?

Thanks!
Alan

For me most of my jpgs are fine but just like film in the film days, I always wanted my negatives in case I got that one shot worthy of a contest or printed display. Raw is my digital negative. For me the best use of raw (when needed) is going back in time to adjust the exposure.
Don't short change yourself, shoot both.

Go the store and handle/try all the cameras, then buy the one that fits in your hand!!!

I would give this advice to someone torn between two systems, like Nikon vs. Canon or Sony vs. Fuji. Just like picking out a golf putter, you can get use to almost anything but how it looks and feels in your hand can only add to the enjoyment. I could get use to Canon but love the way my Nikons feels, it just wouldn't be the same. For DSLR cameras the lens system can be just as important for "buy the one that fits in your hand". I'm not sure I would leave out menu locations when it comes to "buy the one that fits in your hand".

Most great nude portraits, compositions or abstracts are espousing the 'less (exposure) is more' and so do boudoir photographers.

Why?

Nudity for the sake of nudity is banal, even ugly if you think about it. Hide it and the imagination wanders and there you have the biggest potential showing by hiding, play hide and seek if you prefer.

Just think about it.

Speaking from many years of experience; the most interesting girl on a nude beach is the one walking by in a bikini.

My D800e is my seventh Nikon body (spanning 44-years). I suspect that this is my last camera, as doubt if I will ever need more than a 36Mb sensor.

Me too, I recommend buying a used d800e, so much fun!!!

"juggling fstop and iso I was able to raise shutter speed high enough, say 1/1000 or 1/2000 of a second, that the need to use a cumbersome tripod for a sharp shot"

Mabey true but if you want a sharp photo with low ISO and/or want to have your lens stopped down to the sweet spot or require a greater DOF then a tripod is very useful.

I would make sure to catch B&H which I find more interesting than Adorama. And additionally, the High Line is within walking distance of B&H and it is a place you might want to shoot.

Yes, go to B+H don't bother with any others and for sure go to the High Line since you are already over there. You can walk all the way to the Chelsea Market on the High Line and have lunch.
