I'm back to searching for a Laptop PC (not Mac) for photo use. I ordered a MSI Creator series from XOTIC PC - and the mousepad was dead on arrival. The fan was also very loud. It is being returned.

Any recommendations? I'm running Capture One and Affinity Photo with large (40M) files, and my existing (old) Lenovo Think Pad gets bogged down.

I've looked at the Dell XPS 15, but concerned that the graphics card is not powerful enough.

Thanks...

...why not let the company make it right? Two very fixable problems...

I've been telling you all this for years ....

Adobe does a reasonable job of defaulting the settings for all the various 'camera styles'. Their 'standard' is spot on. For Canon EOS, I don't find the Landscape is a good 1:1 recreation, but not a big problem as a starting point for RAW editing.

I also use them, if not often, then regularly, as a starting point!

...check this guy out, he'll have your answer. (But, just off hand, I use Ink Owl and they'd for sure have what you want, as would Precision Colors).

Amazing but scary. We are getting to the point were we not only can not believe everything we hear, but also can not believe everything we see.

...why scary? Is Barney real? ;0)

Lots of people like the V600 Epson. I paid the big bux and bought a v850 but had a special project at the time that demanded (I *thought* at least, lol) that quality. But I'm betting the V600 is a great option.

The lions share of the size is based on planing. All studs are S4S meaning each side is sanded (planed). This and the drying make 2x4. Hardwood is sold by the 1/4. Rough sawn 4 quarter is actually 1”. 2” is 8 quarter etc. S3S is sanded 3 sides with the 4th side is field ripped to the final dimension.

You sound like a knowledgable woodworker (I'm also a cabinetmaker...but still primarily a rough carpenter) and mentioning surfacing is entirely correct...but, still, *drying* doesn't have anything to do with the assignment of size to framing lumber. I buy S2S for my art framing material...lots cheaper but another operation jointing (which I do on my trusty Powermatic 66!).

To all those who took issue with my explanation of why 2x4s are not really 2x4: Your argument is really with Charles Woods, my 9th Grade wood shop teacher (yes, that was his real name) and his explanation why 1-by-lumber was really 3/4 inch thick. We used to call him "Wood Chuck" (when he wasn't around).

...uh, not "arguing" at all, brother, I'm a working (42 years) carpenter and I know my business. I think you, the student, misunderstood Mr. Woods...which is entirely possible for a 9th grader; and definitely possible after a few decades. ;0)

I don't know why a company selling mat board won't sell the size advertised BUT I do know why 2x4 lumber is called 2x4 (although it is smaller). The lumber is measured to the stated size while it is wet and is then dried (either air dried or kiln dried); when the lumber dries it shrinks. As you say, anyone who's ever worked with lumber knows that it is smaller than the nominal size.

...point of order: the lumber is cut at what's called "nominal" dimensions (i.e. 2x4 "nominally" is 1.5x3.5 inches) at the mill. Yes, it will shrink over time but not that much. I've framed with studs that were so wet water would splash on the last hit driving a nail in, and they were cut at 1.5x3.5 and would dry in place (that was a long time ago when I was learning during the tract boom here in SoCal). No way can you depend on shrinkage to determine finish lumber size. I've also demo'd and/or worked on structures with "real" 2x4's that are actually those dimensions...and younger structures where the wood is 1.75x3.75 inches, showing that the industry indeed changed with the times...and got more and more pieces out of a log!

Congrats on your good fortune, not to mention the skills that got you there. Can you tell us how much was invested in the metal print?

You can still use Costco on-line, it's just that the work will be mailed to you,
no more in-store pickup.

Boy, if ya gotta go online, then change to Bay Photo and be done with Costco. I ditched them *years* ago. Never liked their quality. Won't hurt to try!

They're different auto focus technologies as well as numerous common and unique settings. Two examples, one from each camera and stored as attachments, might help to identify configuration differences and opportunities to configure these unique settings.

It's the same in Nikonland, even though similar in theory, I had to *learn* how to focus with my Z's. YMMV
