Thanks much dpullum, if your subject is in good lighting (sun) line it up with a shady background or make sure your background is shade or anything dark in this case it was dark shade from the trees, then all you have to do is adjust the shutter speed very fast and shoot around f/7.1 or so.
You will get a very dark background sometimes solid black, if you need to when processing take the shadows down the highlights up a bit or adjust it where you like it.
The one that is back lit I used a flash to bring out the the shadows in the foreground of the flower and really stepped it down to f11.
