Most COMMERCIAL photographers, like me, don't get up every morning and do our best to create FAKERY or misrepresent, people, products or places. Most of our customer rare "SELLING STUFF"- products, services or "selling" themselves and want all of this to be shown in the best light.

I do agree with most of what you wrote. There is however quite a bit of "Fakery" going on in the advertising field. When I buy some Cherry Vanilla ice cream, I generally buy the brand that has the most tempting photo on the container (that's why it's there). I see luscious vanilla with cherries ... when i get home and open the container I see vanilla and flakes of cherries.
IF I were king: I'd pass a law that would still allow a seller to make claims about a product BUT if a photo was included in the advertising, the product MUST look like the photo.

Re: Commercial Photography.

I too, get up early in the morning to capture a great skyscape at sunrise or wait around in cold weather for the "magic hour" to occur at twilight. I'll even stop my car and get off the road to capture an odd skyscape due to fog or pollution. All of that is for my own personal work and done at my leisure.

Most COMMERCIAL photographers, like me, don't get up every morning and do our best to create FAKERY or misrepresent, people, products or places. Most of our customer rare "SELLING STUFF"- products, services or "selling" themselves and want all of this to be shown in the best light.

Think about this- if you were selling something, would you not want ti to be appealing to the potential customer. If you were selling your photography as "art" who'd you not want to present it well- properly matted or framed. Would you publish a brochure or have a business card with an unattractive portrait of yourself? Would you place it on your website?

Oftentimes commercial assignments of exterior subjects come with deadlines. Some industrial scenes can not be staged- you have to make do with the weather as it is. Murphies law- the client will select the image with a dead sky for the cover of his annual report and the AD want's to strip in the copy overone the "blue sky"!!
Sometimes we need to follow layouts and instructions, sometimes we are given a concept, sometimes we can
create an image to interpret some else's concept. In all cases, we try to create something that is believable and not misrepresentative of anything.

Someof y'all should visit a museum or an art gallery more often. You will notice that some of the artists use saturated colours, some prefer muted colours, some works are realistic, others are impressionistic, and some are abstract. Some works are extremely realistic- almost documentary and others are pure fantasy. Imagine how dull it would be if all the art was the SAME!

Hi Lorvey,
There have been many days when I had the chance to get the shot I wanted/needed, but on that particular day the sky just didn't cooperate. Overcast and plain sky can take away from an otherwise good shot in my opinion, so the 'sky replacement' feature is a great assist in completing the shot.

It doesn't alter the primary shot... I still got the picture of the building, group, bridge, etc. that I was after but hopefully the added sky will serve to enhance the shot. I've use that feature as far back as when it was added to early versions of PS Elements. Now it apprears they have made it more convenient and available in '21.

Of course, one isn't compelled to use it if they prefer not to. Just my opinion, but whatever can be done to enhance or improve your photo... why not? Is it still a 'photo'? Of course it is.
God Bless,
Papa Joe

How many times I wanted a better sky than the one I was photographing because the weather did not allow for something better. When properly done sky replacement is a great tool to enhance our photography. I call it art and fortunately today we have the tools to do those changes.
If the sky is replaced I am in total agreement that the photographer should say so. Not doing so is cheating.

Burning in, removing unwanted objects, dodging, increasing contrast, saturating colors are some of the many tools we have available today in software. We all use them often but it seems as if sky replacement is the exception when indeed it is another tool.
Remember when we did not want an exposure meter incorporated into our camera body?

You refuted your own position by admitting the things you do to enhance your photos.

The only thing I don't do is ADD new items or subjects to the photo without it being clearly understood that something was added. I just choose to not do that. I suppose there are situations where I would change my mind on this. But as noted by many in this discussion, to each his own.

Who cares?

Well, I happen to care about whether I am being deceived or not. Here is an example of a couple of bird pics. I received the first one (purple) from a friend of mine on Facebook. It came with a whole bunch of likes and Wows, and my friend ask if it was real. I did a reverse search on google and found the yellow/orange original photo. It is also oversaturated, but at least it is not purple. There are many people who think the purple one is real and that there are birds like this. It is probably still floating around on the internet and will be eternally.

Anyhow, the deception of the purple birds is probably harmless, but I personally, do not plan to be a part of it unless I label it as such or it is obviously a deception (like dinosaurs on main street).

This is why I ask “how do we know the usage in advance?”. My policy is to save the original version unmodified and to clearly label any photo in which picture elements have been removed {I do not add}.

You do what you want to do and others will do what they want to do. Personally I have never replaced a sky. My only objection to a replaced sky (or any post processing) is when it is so obvious it detracts from the image.

Sky replacement would be a bridge too far for me, but it's a matter of personal taste. I admit to being a purist. Eventually Photoshop will have Full Photo Replacement. With the FPR feature enabled, your crappy backyard snapshot will morph into a jaw-droppingly gorgeous image of your family created by an algorithm duplicating the style and talent of Arnold Newman or 20 other legendary portrait photographers.

Is photography an art or isn't it? If it is, are there any rules to art?

Yes, I think photography is an art. Most photo contests have rules, so they need to be followed. If the contest has not limits, so be it. Other than that, I would feel uncomfortable if I posted an image as a photo on this website or on Facebook, and I then accepted a bunch of compliments even though half of the photo was from my computer.

Luminar and PS 21 can now do sky replacement. Don't get me wrong, I sometimes massage my photos a lot by cropping, using spot repair, cloning out small unwanted bits, adjust exposure, and sometimes add a little saturation. But sky replacement to me seems like too much. Do you still call it a photo after you replace the sky? Do you enter it in a contest without saying anything. Do you accept compliments without saying anything? Not trying to be a purist, but when you start adding and replacing items in a photo, it seems to me it is no longer a photo. It's probably photo art. Not trying to start a fight, just interested in your perspective.

Since this has not been mentioned yet, Picasa 3.0 will create collages. The link to download it is below. It's free and simple to use. You open your images you want in the collage, then click on "Create", then "Picture Collage".

To be quite fair here isn't the main concern of you Left Wingers to elect a Democrat? Of course Trump wants to be reelected. But you seem to put some onus of evil on him for wanting to do that. Every President wants to be reelected. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Trump has taken on many Conservative positions since his e******ns as he should have done. It is Trump who supports the Constitution though you Left Wingers tell us, with no proof, he is anti Constitution. But everything I hear him say goes along 100% with the values of the Constitution.

On the contrary it is you Left Wingers who are against the Constitution, claiming it is a living document to be changed at will. You do not value the 1st, 2nd or 4th Amendments and are willing to go against them for your own political agenda.

What President actually does write his own speeches? None I have ever heard of. But what is important is they put words to those speeches, their words. Trump read in a monotone? I have never heard him monotone anything. He could not monotone ordering a cheeseburger if he tried. You must have been listening to Sleepy Joe Biden slurring his speech while trying to remember what it was all about.

Dennis, we are very far apart on Trump. First of all, I am not a Left Winger, I am and have been a Republican all my life. I am disgusted with Trump's behavior and his lack of integrity. There are many of us Republicans voicing our unfavorable position on Trump.

Yes, every President wants to get re-elected, but Trump places this issue ahead of the interests of the nation. He does not even try to represent or unify everyone in the USA, just those who support his ego. He is in it for himself, not for the betterment of the whole nation.

Trump has voiced conservative positions because that is a part of his con-game. He needs to voice those to have your support and the support of many other conservatives. He doesn't personally believe in conservative principles. He doesn't care about a******n and is actually pro choice. He goes to church and shows the Bible only when it serves himself and his purpose. He has a disdain for the military, and really does not care about Veterans. But he has to act like he cares about all these issues.

Regarding the constitution, based on his well-known position on not reading, I would be very surprised if he has ever read it. Based on his actions, he believes he is the supreme leader of the country and Congress and the Supreme Court are subservient to him. His positions on the constitution are voiced to maintain his base, but his true principles lie in supporting his narcissistic personality.

Regarding his monotone method of delivery, that is a judgement issue by you and me. We differ. When he reads from a pre-prepared script, I believe it is monotone. When he speaks off the cuff, in an interview or in a question and answer session, I agree, it is truly not monotone.

I don't know Trump personally, but I base all my positions of reading articles and books written by people that know him personally, have worked for him, or have experienced his behavior. I do not intend to debate this further, you have your position, and I have mine. I am ready to v**e.
