I'm going to be taking an extended road trip in a couple of weeks, and I would really be interested in any thoughts/suggestions. My wife passed away a few months ago, and I've decided I need to get away for awhile. Here is my plan so far. Leaving from Milwaukee, I'm going to spend a couple of days in MN with some good friends. Then the trip will really start with a trip through the Badlands and a visit to Mt. Rushmore. From there, I am headed to Utah to visit a number of places, starting with Arches National Park. I was there a few years ago and did not get to Delicate Arch and want to visit that landmark this time. Next is a drive down highway 24 to Capitol Reef. From there to Bryce Canyon. Next is Zion National Park. The last 2 stops will be Monument Valley and Mexican Hat Rock. I plan to do some hiking (not the really hard stuff) and just take as many photos as I can. So any ideas you may have will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry I don’t remember his name, but the gentleman from Utah who posts great shots from all over the state. I’m going there on an extended trip and would love to pick his brain on best spots to explore and shoot.

Nice pictures! He appears to play with both feet which is very good for his age. He also wears #10 indicating that he might be the most skillful player on the team...and making Pele very proud!

Thanks. Yes, he is a good player and a great kid.

Don't take this wrong!! I shoot for MaxPrep.com. One of their big things is don't shoot any backs, try and shoot them coming to your are at least from in front from the side. Thanks

The two keys in my opinion are 1-Get the shot and 2-Be sure you include everyone that attends.
Get the shot - so using a good flash bouncing off ceiling and go with Auto ISO.
It's not a photo contest; it's documenting an event!!

Thank you. Yeah, I agree, have to get the shot.

Planning is key. Try to get a view of the facilities before the day of the shoot. Get a schedule, of events, and be sure to bring extra batteries and flash cards. Tripod might be useful for group photos.

Thanks. Good ideas.

Many thanks to all the ideas and suggestions. I’m going to give it a go. What could go wrong? But seriously you have given me some confidence to take this on.

D500 with the 24-70 should be the ticket... Don't use the flash. Wedding photogs SELDOM do. Find a way into the venue prior to the event and take practice images. You have a fairly fast lens and plenty of ISO to play with.

Flash will cause you Way more problems than it is worth.

Suggest you start with manual, SS 250, aperture 1step down and ISO on auto with 6400 maximum. You should have plenty of capability with some minor pp to do this.

Best of luck

Thanks, that’s very helpful.

My daughter in law has asked me to provide photography for an upcoming reception that she is hosting for a non-profit organization that she heads up. What I know so far is that it will be indoors, late afternoon, early evening, but I have not seen the facilities yet. It will most likely include random shots and a number of group photos. I haven’t said ‘yes’ yet because this is way beyond my pay grade, but I am excited about the opportunity. I shoot with a Nikon D500. I have a Sigma 18-35, and a Tamron 24-70. I do have a flash that I can use, depending on the lighting. I’m looking for any suggestions I can get. Thanks!

I have Canon's DPP, GIMP 2 and a few other programs but want to learn and use Photoshop. (So I am told, anyway!). There are numerous online courses and a few at the community collage. Which version of Photoshop should I purchase and what do you recommend for learning in addition to trial and error? Thank you all in advance.

There is a Youtube Channel that I have just found that has been very helpful in getting me started in understanding Photoshop: Photos in Color.

Start with "(Part 1) What is Photoshop" and then "(Part 2) Photoshop Quickstart Guide.) It has over 300,000 subscribers. You might want to give that a try>

Shooting Nikon d7200. Looking to buy used or refurbished 150 to 600 and 18 to 400 either Tamron or Sigma any ideas where I might find one?

I have this lens that I use on my Nikon D7200. I bought it through Amazon from Ritz Photo in May, 2015. I'm thinking of a price of $600, and I can include the CPL lens that came with it. The lens is in perfect condition.

This is one of the most unique places I have visited. It is just West/Southwest of Arches National Park. My wife and I stayed in Moab, UT. which is a good starting point for both parks. Canyonlands NP is divided into four districts.

1. Island in the Sky which is located in the Northern part.
2. The Needles which is located in the Southern part.
3. The Maze which is located in the Western part.
4. The Colorado and Green Rivers which run through the Canyonlands.

The difference between Island in the Sky and Needles is striking. Both are of a different in altitude and geology. These pictures of The Needles and some sights along the way.

Thanks for looking.

These are great shots of one of my favorite places to visit. When I was there a couple years ago, I took a car ride south out of Moab to La Sal Loop Rd. It turned out to be a great ride. It takes you through some beautiful vistas and overviews and the final loop takes you along the Colorado River before returning to Moab. For those who are visiting that area, it’s something you might want to check out.
