If the OP had not mentioned that these images were made with a cell phone, do you suppose anyone would have asked what model of cell phone was used by the photographer. I am agreeing with you; I also like everything about the images. When I look at an image, I don't decide whether or not I like the image based on the camera that took it anymore than I would ask the model and brand of the pen or typewriter was was used to put the poem on paper. I am likely to be curious about the camera and the process of making the image, but this does not add to or detract from my appreciation of the image.

Let’s see, a picture was taken, then emailed, then posted, we have all seen it and enjoyed it. What can a “real camera” do? I missing something.

Good point

The grand's went to Florida. Drove non-stop to avoid restaurants. Private house on private beach with no strangers around. Made me nervous but I guess can't be safer than that. These are from the daughter in law cell phone, emailed and PS'ed.

Grand Dad is at home fishing (cold) ponds for bass and jealous!

Sorry - hit send on the on shot before I finished. All three now included.

Correct what? Autofocus is only good if everything in the scene that you want to be in focus is at the same distance from the focal plane. (Taking into account depth of field, of course).

I shoot a canon 90D. about a year old. However, my eyes are 71 years old, have both had cataracts and i wear progressive lenses. Manual focus eh what? I miss the old days of split screen manual focus. Any actual tips for manual for an old(er) fart like me? I would be interested.

Have you considered showing her any forums like this one where she will find that the world doesn’t need even one more photo of flowers or landscapes and maybe she would rather take up exotic cooking, politics, or brain surgery ?

I do surgery although not on brains. Foot and Ankle AND i photograph things. The surgery is a living, podiatry is a living, and I do that for others. Well, ok, I do make a living at it as well. The photography is for ME. Trhow out thousands of shots, and find one I love. pat myself on the back. Go back. Look again. Find the faults. Promise to do better. This world always needs one more pic of a flower. Who know, that may be the self esteem she finds to know she can do great things....like be a brain surgeon. Laughing. And maybe she can show up some old hogs such as us?

One of my staff's grand daughter really "thinks" she wants to get into photography. Her idea is flowers, landscapes and similar. I grew up with pentax, then minolta and now Canon 90D but know little about the new Nicons, Canon Rebels, or even Pentax for that matter. What I am sure about is the best way to learn a camera is to shoot it and the best way to learn the technical aspects is interchangeable lenses.

For a "newbie", and remember she is only 14 years old and really has never had a camera, would you stick with interchangeable lenses ( I would think so) and what brand? Mother and grandmother want to stay "cheap" but not buy her a "toy"

There are a lot of people on here with a lot more knowledge and opinions than mine. What say you all?

"Teach a child to love photography and they will never do drugs. They won't have the money left over!"

Thanks all

But of course logarithm is used a lot in photographic exposure and trigonometry is used in angle of view and stuff.

I can do log still...well....maybe not. Laighi6ng. And still have my old Pickett slide rule and tried and still know how to use . But geometry and algebra always just made perfect commen sence. Did trigg and calc at all A's but it just never made good common sence to me

Yes

Log (Lux/2.5)/Log (2)=LV

If you have Log to the base 2 function (like in Excel) then
Log2 (Lux/2.5)=LV

That if you measure using a flat diffuser. With a dome use 3.3 instead of 2.5.

Thanks for reminding me how much I hated working with Log's. Also sin, cos and tan. And calc. OK, i really did love algebra and geometry. The rest...thankfully a very distant memory.

Jack’s Camera Shop in Muncie, Indiana, closed its physical store and has gone online only, maintaining its online sales division. All the employees were friendly and knowledgable, and would go out of the way to answer questions and help however they could. It has been my go-to store for over fifty years now, and they made the best monochrome prints.

RIP Jack’s.

My closest physical camera store is now Robert’s in Indianapolis, an hour’s drive.

PIA for you but I have always loved Roberts. Years ago we also had Cords and they closed. Roberts is great but damn, that drive.

Good Luck.
