I have been doing flowers in my yard. Using a eos R body with the 100mm lens. My problem is that i can't use auto focus. When i set my lens to auto it is always running. So I have to go to Manuel focus. Is there a way to correct this?

Sounds like maybe there is not enough contrast in the frame for the camera to lock onto. I'm assuming the camera has contrast detection and not phase?

Correct what? Autofocus is only good if everything in the scene that you want to be in focus is at the same distance from the focal plane. (Taking into account depth of field, of course).

so I would be better off using spot focus rather then central focus.

Sort of ignoring your question, but I always use manual focus with a macro lens. The depth of field is so shallow when shooting close to a subject you are better served to use manual focus to control exactly where your focus is.

Use Single Spot Focus! for Still and Continues Focus for Movement. Also have the least amount of Focus Points is my understanding!

DPAF is what the camera uses which is a step above phase detect.
Not sure what the issue is, is there a subject you can show?

Do you normally use manual focus with your other lenses? The R has a continous focus option that keeps the auto-focus active whenever the camera is on. Mine came with it on, which I promptly turned off. That would show up on every lens that was set to auto though, so, I don't see how that would cause your issue with just your 100 unless you use manual focus on the other lenses.

I think that when shooting MACRO, you would do well to use a ring light and if focus is still “IFFY” get used to manually focusing for the real close-up shots...RJM

I use the 100 f2.8L IS macro lens and in low contrast situations, occasionally the lens goes a little wacko trying to auto focus and I switch to manual in live view. Perhaps, your situation is similar?

PLUS: when I have used AF the camera very often chooses a bug's knee, antenna, wing tip or something other than the EYE! I prefer the eye, stamen, etc to be sharp but the camera in AF can not comprehend that. Spot AF is 2nd best to manual, when "hunting" is not involved.

The Canon R bodies default to using continuous autofocus ALL the time, even when you aren't pressing the shutter half way. There is a menu setting to change this so that it will only focus when you give the shutter a half press. This is very annoying and was the first thing I noticed with the M series and R series of bodies.

It would be nice if they defaulted with it off and let us decide to use it or not. Glad this helped.
