This is my 2nd time posting a photograph. I have a fettish for taking photos of signs & notices when travelling in my home country (Australia) or abroad. I took this shot at one of our so called "Whistle Stops" (approx midway near Alice Springs) when travelling on the Ghan. The train journey starts in Darwin (north) and ends in Adelaide (south) the breadth of Australia.

The area near & around Alice is very arid most of the year and the thought of anyone being gut-shot and left for the eagle's dinner played on my mind for some time!

Many thanks Alan. It is nice to get a "thumbs up" from another photographer.

Deb,
I'm glad you asked this question about sports (football) photography as I have gleaned lots of useful information from all the UHH members who responded to your original query. My Grandson plays football (soccer) and it has been a challenge for me to capture that special "moment" when he or any of his team mates do something spectacular during the game of play.

It wasn't until recently that I learnt (still learning) to use the back button focussing function on my camera. It does take a bit of getting used to but, am getting more familiar with it. I will admit I get more acceptable results using this method (& of course a fast shutter speed). Not sure if it is correct or not, but, I use centre spot focussing mainly because I'm usually following one player.

I am no longer able to walk the sidelines (or stand behind the goal post areas) for action shots but must sit in one place. I use a 70-300mm lens so I can zoom in when play is at the far end of the field.

Kneeling down down or getting low or even high (grandstand or similar seating on side of field) is another plus for unusual angles to capture.

The above is from what I have personally experienced over the last couple of years and from hundreds of photos taken that are in the "to be deleted" files. I keep them to look back over to see what settings I used and hopefully how to improve my skills in the next game.

I am including a photo (no post editing) I took (sitting in a chair) at the last game before the mid-season break. Not sure if it will include any camera settings as it was download to my iPad. I think sports photography is one of the hardest genres to perfect. Another point that was raised by one of the UGG members was to know the game (any game you're following) and follow the play in anticipation.

Regardless of what genre of photography one does it takes practice, practice and practice.

Looking forward to seeing more of your photos in the future.

Thank you for your warm welcoming message. I have ordered a Zen Tilt and have sent an email to the company asking for more details but no response to date. I hope the product is better than their so called "support" service. Will be interested in reading your comments once you have used your Zen Tilt plate.

I have just registered with the Ugly Hedgehog Forum in the hope that I will gain further insight to the photographic world as I am on a large learning curve in photography. Another reason was to reply to a comment I saw about a Zen Tilt plate attachment which was retailing at a "special" intro price of USD$56. I too thought this to be a good item to have and so made a purchase. After doing so, decided to check out if same item was sold on eBay. I should not have been surprised to see a similar item for a much cheaper price. Of course the product name was different and it was manufactured in an Asian country so not sure if quality would be the same. In the interim I have sent an email to Zen Tilt asking them to confirm their product's specifications which incidentally was not listed on their purchase site nor in their video promo. Am hoping that Zen Tilt will respond quickly to my questions. If I'm not satisfied with their product they offer a 30 day full refund period which I will certainly use. For other readers of Ugly Hedgehog Forum who think that the Zen Tilt price is too hefty for this item perhaps they would care to check out the alternative on eBay.
