Ed Sullivan , Louis Armstrong and Connie Frances came to Berlin in October 1961. I happened to be on gate guard when Mr. Sullivan entered the compound escorted by a soldier. I had to refuse entry to Mr.Armstrong and direct him to another gate because he was in the company of a Berlin couple. In a Bright shiny Black Mercedes I might add. Satchmo was very understanding of the rule. He said he loved to come to Berlin for Sauerkraut and Eisbon.

Thank you for reminding me how beautiful Potsdam is. Our first visit was in 1998 during our military reunion in Berlin, second visit was in 2010.Very interesting.. Berlin with the U.S. Army 1961 to 1963.

Berlin is my second home. I spent 31 months there from Feb.1961 to Aug.1963 with the U S Army.I have been back 3 times the last in 2010 and have seen much of the restoration of the city. It is remarkable how Potsdammer Platz looks now compared to the sixties. Thank you for sharing the beauty of Berlin.
Of course Berlin is my favorite city in Germany since I served there from 1961 to 1963 but Germany is a beautiful country and has so much to offer those who will take the time to see all the beauty.
Bamberg, Hanover, Helmstedt, Dresden, Kassel, Wurtzburg,Nuremberg, Munich are worth a visit.
Be very careful as some of them are very slick.
Hard to beat a slow drive on a dirt road with country music on the radio.
