I actually just tried updating the distortion control firmware update on my D5500. Would not update. I switched out my SD card to my backup card, and the update went perfectly. Not sure what the difference was, my original is a 64gb, and my backup is a 32gb. Again, no idea, but it did update in the second card...
If the update has to do with updated lenses, I believe you have to have the new lens on your camera for the update to actually update. Could be wrong on that...
Scratch that, I am probably wrong. I was going on an earlier thread, but it had to do with "P" lenses, and after the firmware was installed, the menu option wouldn't show up until the lens was installed. Sorry about that.
I haven't had that problem (yet), but something I did after getting my Nikon D5500 was to download the User's Manual, and Reference Manual to my iPad and iPhone, so I always have a searchable manual with me, just in case I need information fast.
A few months ago, I went through the same choice as you. At that time it was the T6i vs the D5500. I read as much as I could on both of them, even watched some YouTube videos to see some of the features being used. Finally, went to the store, handled both, tried using the different features on each one, and chose the one that fit my hands best, and was most intuitive for me to use. In my case it was the D5500.
I would suggest as others have, that you go to the store and handle each of your finalists yourself. Try the different features out, and see which one, in your hands is easier to use. If you can't intuitively switch your ISO, Shutter, or Aperture without looking after a few tries, maybe you'll want to look at something else. Look at your menu structures on each, if one makes more sense to YOU, that would be a plus for that camera.
When all is said and done, have fun, with whatever camera you choose!

The camera generates the wifi signal that is received by your phone -- no cellular signal is involved. You can probably get an older smartphone free from friends, or pick one up on eBay for a few bucks. You don't need to subscribe to any cellular phone service to be able to use the wifi capabilities of the phone.
Or a newer iPad/iPad mini or similar android device. Only downside is the wifi running in the camera really uses the battery on the camera.
Overall, I prefer the ML-L3, but the wifi option is nice to have just in case.

I don't have a smartphone so an app won't do me any good...even if I did...90% of the places we go have no cell service anyway. I have a $60 gift card for B&H...so might as well use it for one.
To use the app you do not need cell service, the camera makes its own wifi connection to your cell phone or iPad for control and transfer of photos. Not really relevant to you if you don't have a smart device.
The ML-L3 works fine for me, though make sure you set its 'Remote on duration' in your menu. It seemed like my D5500 defaulted to 1 minute. Once you set that portion, you don't need to change it again. I've set mine for 15 minutes.
On my D5500;
MENU - CUSTOM SETTING DENU - TIMERS/AE LOCK - REMOTE ON DURATION (ML-L3) - 15m
The Nikon ML-L3 sells for $18 through Adorama, though I have seen it at various prices elsewhere from $5 to $25.
I have the D5500 and use the wireless remote or the Wireless Mobile Utility on my iPhone. The D5500 has an IR receiver on both the front and rear of the camera, as does the D5300.
I use Elements 15 on my Windows 10-64bit computer with no problems. I believe Elements 15 only runs/installs on 64bit machines.
Had a raccoon as a pet when I was eighteen, and we had a skunk as a pet when our kids were young. The skunk was descented, but he still had a smell about him. Funny thing since having the skunk, except on rare occasions, skunk spray now smells like coffee to me. Funny thing, I love coffee...
By the way, skunks don't see well at all. Our pet skunk would follow us looking like he was drunk, but it was because as we took each step, one of our heels would disappear so he'd home in on the other heel.
I'm thinking 'your' skunk didn't even see the fox.

Avery nice image, but I would like to see Frankie's eyes.
I agree. Her big brown eyes are so allusive unless a flash is used. Didn't even think to use a flash at the beach. Just looked at the pictures I took that day, even the colored ones, and black is the color of the day for her eyes.
