Hi, I noticed that there was an update for my D5300 and decided to install.Twice I downloaded & tried to install but the camera does not recognize the file on the card. Did not want to proceed beyond that for fear that I might do more damage than good. Below are the steps I took:

Format card in camera
Downloaded file onto my Mac
Copied to card (yes to the root directory of the card)
Ejected card from Mac
Inserted card in camera & then turned on
Went to firmware version - did not get notification of update available

That's where I left it,as I said did go any further. Didn't want to take any chances of doing any harm.

Any suggestions, did I miss something/ do something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated, unfortunately no camera stores in Pittsburgh so I am relying on the community.

Thanks for looking & taking your time

You probably saw the site linked below, but here is it, anyway.

Fortunately, my updates have gone smoothly.

Are you sure you need this update?

I can not comment on MAC procedure. However, for PCs, make certain you copy only the bin file to your memory card-nothing else. If other files are transferred, delete all of them but the bin file before you attempt to update.

I just went thru this with my 5300 and a Mac
I needed to double click on the icon to open the file and then transfer that to the memory card.
All worked well, but I was surprised to find a new icon on my screen.
It looks like a left palm between two brackets,I thought that I messed up the camera till I searched and found that it meant " VR on"
Good Luck

If the update has to do with updated lenses, I believe you have to have the new lens on your camera for the update to actually update. Could be wrong on that...

Scratch that, I am probably wrong. I was going on an earlier thread, but it had to do with "P" lenses, and after the firmware was installed, the menu option wouldn't show up until the lens was installed. Sorry about that.

Did you copy the BIN file only? Usually, after downloading the Firmware file to your desktop you need to click on it to extract the bin file

I actually just tried updating the distortion control firmware update on my D5500. Would not update. I switched out my SD card to my backup card, and the update went perfectly. Not sure what the difference was, my original is a 64gb, and my backup is a 32gb. Again, no idea, but it did update in the second card...

Interesting. Same brand?

No, Sandisk Extreme Pro 64gb, and Lexar Professional 32gb.

I have done previous firmware update with the Sandisk though, and both SD cards were formatted in the camera. Odd!

Just tried it again with the Sandisk 64gb, and the file is now recognized as being there by the camera, and will update. Again, Odd!

Thanks everyone, apparently the file I downloaded is a zip file that needs extracted. This seems to be similar to what SparkyNYC had to do & what mborn indicated. I will give that a shot this evening after I get home from work.

Thanks for all of the input!

Well, apparently that isn't the problem. I extracted the file as instructed, copied to card , ejected & then to camera. Still not recognizing the new file. Another call to Nikon I guess.

I had the same problem. Make sure you are copying the .BIN file and not the whole folder I put it both in the ROOT file and in a folder outside the ROOT file before it showed up in the firmware update in the camera.
