Yes, you'll have to leave your filter on from start to finish; as I understand it, the view of the Sun unfiltered, even at the high percentage of coverage by the Moon in your city, would still appear quite bright, and quite able to do major damage to eyes and camera sensors.

So, we're supposed to be at 97%. I guess if I want to shoot unfiltered for that (closest to) totality moment, I am just gambling on sensor damage? I would on use live view and not look at the sun.

Jean, It's nice to see you on here. I'm from Piggott (Pumpkin Hollow). Beautiful sunrise!

I really like my Tokina 11-16 2.8. Reasonable priced and quality images. It was recommended to me by a pro photographer for DX cameras. I use it on a Canon 70D or Canon 7DII.

I answered before I thought through what you were saying. I do understand why focus/recompose does not work in the situations you describe. Thanks for the reminder. I do get sloppy and forget that important fact sometimes.

Gal, welcome to the Hog, I had not seen you around before.
You can lock your focus by whatever means works best for you, whether BBF or shutter button, makes no difference. As long as your focus is locked you are free to recompose and your original focus distance will not change but the distance to your subject will change the second you move you move your camera. With a very shallow dof there is a high likelyhood that your subject will be slightly out of focus and a bit soft, as my example has shown.
I'm glad you asked, as you're the type of shooter that I'm trying to reach and raise this awareness. ;-)

So, isn't this another reason to use back button focus? Or, am I misunderstanding? Or focus lock?

Tracy, you are correct in this.
I specifically mentioned landscape, small f-stops and wide angle lenses as being particularly recompose friendly.
But in portraits and shooting weddings I've had this problem and I'm very aware of it. But you don't always have a choice but to recompose! ;-)

After 2 years of saving $ and finally deciding which lens would best suit my needs, I ordered a new Canon 100-400LII on Friday and it's on the truck to be delivered today!! I'm very excited!! When I first started saving for a lens, I was sure it would be the 70-200 f/2.8LII, but after getting a great refurb deal on the 24-105, I started wondering if I'd be happy with only another 95mm in reach. Then, the new 100-400 came out... I still had to decide which I needed/wanted more - speed or reach. Since I shoot more outside, I went with reach. I also reached out to a fellow UHH forum member for his advice, and coupled with reading all of the various threads here, I feel I made the wisest decision for me. I'd still love that 70-200 some day, buy maybe version I. Thank you, everyone, for posting your various questions and concerns about different lenses. I read them all, and it really helped my thinking process! :)

That is my solution also.

I've dealt with this same issue, as I have been using BBF exclusively (when hand held) for a couple of years. I've found no problem at all with use of the cable release when I choose to do so. I've set a custom setting on my Canon 5DII that simply returns the camera to shutter release focusing when I'm using the cable release. No confusion, as I only use BBF when hand held and it's not an issue when on a tripod using cable release.

Thanks for your input. I have found a local individual who will do it very reasonably for me. I am not too much on DIY. :)

If you have a digital camera and can get a 40 or 60mm macro lens you could probably do it yourself. You may need to invest in a slide copier or better yet buy or borrow a used one. You could also make your own if you check the web for construction ideas on making your own copiers. There is some work involved here, but it is definitely doable, cheaper, and more fun than sending them out to a commercial lab.

Interesting. However, since I just have the one box, I think I'll let someone else do it for me. Thanks for the info.

I have written before about a process that you might want undertake. Use your digital camera (assuming that you have one). Set up your camera with a macro lens of 40-60mm. On a second tripod set up a slide copier. You might have to borrow one if you do not have one. use a light or a flash(on a third separate tripod) and shoot away. You may have to shoot several shots before you get the correct adjustment of f/stop and or shutter speed to get the results that you need. If this method sounds too complicated then listen to our other poster friends and find a place that they recommend.

We live as far north and east as you can get and still be in the state--about 10 miles north of Piggott. I love living in the middle of nowhere! We have had a pumpkin patch/corn maze, etc., here for 23 years. Lots of back roads photo ops.
