canon 16-35mm wide angle substitute?

cannot afford the above lens which I know is recommended by many landscape photographers. So what third party wide angle lens (zoom) for canon 70d will do the job starting at 16mm. Thanks for your help!! Probably will be using this lens for landscapes at at f11-f16,but primarily at f 16.

Be careful. Is the 16-35 recommended by full frame users? On your camera it's really 24-52. I have a 17-40 and a 24-105 and often use the 17-40 mm on a full frame for some landscapes because 24 isn't wide enough.

yes the 16-35mm is recommended by the full framers.I already have an 18-135mm lens for my canon t4i and 70d so I need a 12mm-xmm zoom(wide angle) for these cameras for the full frame equivalent. Thanks !

The version II is much less expensive than the version III. The MTF charts look like it is the bottom of a coke bottle too...
Take a look at the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 released last year.

If I had a crop sensor and I do, I would look for a zoom starting in the 8-10 range. I love "scapes," and UWA. My solution was the Canon EFs 10-22, very sharp glass. Lots of third party glass and used stuff to buy as well as native. I would be hard pressed to say a particular UWA is a bad lens maybe bad copies. Canon 10-18 I have seen used at 100-150 USD.

The EF-S 10-18 and EF-S 10-22 are highly regarded with the first model also providing IS. There's now several 16-35Ls from Canon. For landscape are you referring to the f/4 or f/2.8 models? Have you looked at the 17-40L? Finally, have you looked at used models of these ideas at KEH?

for models of wideangle lenses I am looking at the f4 range as the 2.8"s are out of my budget.Thanks!!

tamron 15 30 2.8 v.c The image stabiliser is unbelievable. this lens is the equal of the 16 35 series 2 or the f4 . (I have a series 2 for sale).

Tokina makes nice wide angle lenses. I had the 11-16mm on a DX and the 16-28mm on an FX. The 11-16mm would be appropriate for your 70D.

I will repeat once again what has already been said, do not expect the 16-35 lens to perform at its best with a crop body. As Jerry has already pointed out to you independent lens makers have very nice wide angles for your body at reasonable prices. I know that both of the lenses that he mentions are very good optics. I used a Tokina 12-24 f4 years ago and I was very pleased with the results I got from it.
Sigma and Tamron also have some very nice wide angle optics. I guess you will have to take your camera to a dealer and if the dealer carries those lenses you should ask them to let you test those lenses in your camera so that you can select what you exactly need.

I believe the 70d is a crop frame which would mean you're actually shooting at around 25 m. I used the the canon 10-22 for a long time with great results..The 10-22 would be shootong at 16 m on a crop sensor

Tokina has some highly regarded wide angles, at reasonable cost. I know that there was a rebate for some of those but not sure when that expires. Even Ken Rockwell, who typically disses third party lens manufacturers, has good things to say about Tokina.

katawny, thanks for your advice! yes it looks like either the canon 10-18mm or the 10-22mm is going to be my choice. Since only the 10-18mm has IS ;I:m favoring this one. Also the price is right at 279$ but will check e-bay for it and I might get it for 150$ or under. the 10-22 has a lot of chromatic aberration so I:m told. Have a Good one!

The cheapie Canon 10-18 provides really good pics , is IS, is compact, and most importantly....It's a Canon
