I know Hongkong is knock off haven, seen lots of fake things in my travels there. I have many friends who work there and knew a police woman back in the late 70's who took me and friends around back shops in Kowloon that sells some pretty good knock off of popular brands. I even bought a knock off Rolex watch for $10 which still works to this day. My brother owns it now. But i bought my Pentax MX from a big camera store also in Kowloon because i already know to be wary.
I suggest buying from reputable stores/dealers to be safe.

I have the 1st gen VI and I'm amazed at the pic quality when taken in good light. I've been wanting to sell it and all lenses but have not gotten around to doing as its always the camera i carry when going places.

We spent a week in Paris back in 2011 and took lots of pictures but never did have any problem but of course i was not taking pictures of people by shoving camera in their face. I did do a bit of street photography discreetly using a 35 1.8 set at f8 and hang my camera by my neck. I managed to get quite a bit of interesting photos that way.

Easter mass at Notre Dame was filled with boy scouts from all over the country and there were some who've set up their tele and tripod among the crowd and no one cared.
