I just returned from Hong Kong and the city/state is replete with great photo ops.
As usual when I pack for a trip I forget one or two things. This trip I forgot to bring my tripod. One of the amateur photographers who works at the hotel where I stayed told me about a great camera store in Kowloon (a section of HK). The store is Sim City. The building is 6 stories high filled with camera equipment. The prices are lower than in the USA and very few items are gray market.
The stores appear to have every imaginable camera brands and accessories. They have loads of used lenses and gear.

One last note. My flight went thru Beijing and the Chinese version of TSA made me remove my camera from my backpack and they counted my camera batteries. I had five with me and the maximum they allow is two or three. I am pleased to say when I opened my camera bag only two were in sight.

Yes, well between what is said or even advertised in a foreign country buyer beware (of grey market). It does not matter for small stuff, really but cameras and lenses?

Nope I would not touch that with a 10 foot pole.

To give an honest opinion on the dangers of grey market is being negative?

To point misleading advertisement (from the store, not the op) is being negative?

HK is known for its grey market prices sold as 'legal USA warranty'. If anyone purchased something of value from there (camera, lens or flash) use the serial number to check for USA warranty ~ good luck with that~..

Then you have all the knock offs.

Buyer beware.

Was in HK in March and went to the place you referred to. It's actually a collection of many small shops spanning several floors. I picked up a couple of Canon remote shutter controls but ended up paying what I could have gotten the same thing for at Amazon or B&H so I don't think the deals are really there. It was interesting to walk around and see photo gear that you would not necessarily see at other stores (except B&H).

What comes to mind in reading this is the many cameras and lenses I've owned over the years that became obsolete before I ever needed to have them serviced.

A nice sentiment ...

but what brand of camera or lens is made in America? Kodak once filled that space but I don't hear much about Kodak any more.

I guess that means that we can't buy Nikon or Canon since neither is American or made in America. In fact it means there are very few things that you could buy since most things are manufactured overseas.

I also have a problem with that statement. What is American? If a company imported all the parts it needed to build a given widget is that widget still an American product? Or do you insist that all the parts have to be made in America as well?

And what about the materials that the parts are made of, should those metals and plastics also have to come from America? That would be a really tough requirement since the States doesn't in fact have all the materials that it needs for many modern electronic products.

And what about labour? Do the products have to be made by only American citizens? Or will you also accept immigrants and people on temporary work visas? But if it's ok to hire foreign workers, why not also accept foreign parts?

Then we have trade agreements that benefit all countries in the group. How is Buy American sensitive to those other markets? By buying American you would be snubbing those other countries with whom there are trade agreements. Should that mean that they should not buy American because Americans don't buy their products? In that case how does America benefit by turning potential allies away for the sake of Buy American?

I'd be intrigued to see how you define the Buy American phrase.

I have purchased goods in Hong Kong for over twenty years, including electronics and photography equipment.Have never had any problems with operational aspects and many items had warranties. However, there are legitimate stores as well as those set up for unsuspecting tourists. Must know the difference!!!
