You did very well. I believe the original was a late 19th picture printed in larger than 8X10 format. As many as 20,000 photographs like this one were used to teach classes in schools of architecture before slides were introduced. When I was first hired to teach ancient art at Washington University in 1969, I was offered an office full of such photographs that were discarded by the School of Architecture. I convinced the university to save them and there is now a rare collection of 22-25 thousand, some as large as 16X20in.

Peta Pixel posted an amazing 4-minute video of the half moon photographed with the new Leica 400mm f/2.8 lens and as many as three TC lenses at once. The result is a zooming magnification of the surface up to 15,000 times when we see individual craters close-up yet without loss of sharpness !!

I use an 80-400mm lens with no image stabilization on a Canon T2i with 18MP 1.6x crop format sensor. Keep in mind that these samples are low res but you should still open the download link.

The half moon is superb, the full moon (is it the 1000mm reflex?) is like mine.

I’d suggest trying different apertures to discover the sharpest setting for your camera and use the mirror up option. Faster shutter speeds may also help as the moon is in motion. Set the tripod to its lowest position for greater stability. I also found that it seems sharper when it’s overhead since there’s less atmospheric interference.

Hopefully you’re comfortable with using RAW format as you almost always need to increase sharpness in post processing.

I wish you the best!

I would love to see your moon photos with the 1000mm lens.

ELNikkor: I drive for an hour....

I am curious: I tried twice during last full moon using the same 1000 lens and TC-14B on the Nikon D500. The moon fits tightly into the frame with this setup. BUT: the images were not sharp even though I used a tripod and remote control. I used speeds from a low 320 to a high 640. I wondered whether it was the wind or that I was photographing when the moon was low in the horizon and there was too much haze. could it be that the lens is not sharp?? I shouldn't use the TC-14B?
Are your image sharp?

Samantha: I googled and found the name of the sculpture as "Iron Did Swim", located at Willow Park. The sculptor Joe Barrington made the stainless steel Alligator Gar recently and together with the base is 24' tall.

A wonderful discovery and successful photograph. I am curious to know the sculptor and dedicator. There is usually a sign attached nearby.

It seems as though you have the earliest model from 1964-1973. For your information, the original price for a new lens was $2,400 in 1976 and $3600 in 1988!

Beautiful images, as always! I am surprised how sharp they are with the old D100 (my first digital too!). You took good care making them sharp.

Your photography covers a great deal of ground and this forum has already given you excellent suggestions. I believe you are actually looking for an art historian. These experts have looked at thousands of images by painters and great photographers. Taking a class or just reading a book about art history will train you to become the best judge of your own images. Why not read H. W. Janson, HISTORY OF ART.

Thank you Mike for this magnificent set of images. To those who may not know, Fioli, also known as the Bourn-Roth Estate, is located 25 miles South of San Francisco.
