I came across this metal sculpture of a gar fish. I had my Mom stand by it for scale. The sculpture is located on a tributary of the Trinity river that runs through Dallas and Fort Worth. I did some investigation and found that these fish are common in the river. I don't think they get this big but the pictures I saw revealed they have teeth like a barracuda. Why the sculpture is there I have no idea.

The largest is the alligator gar which have been reported to about 10 feet, but normally grow to about 6.5 feet...so that one seems to be a bit oversized.

Artistic license?

That's a lot of gar. The article says it is an Alligator Gar - 24 feet.

A wonderful discovery and successful photograph. I am curious to know the sculptor and dedicator. There is usually a sign attached nearby.

Samantha: I googled and found the name of the sculpture as "Iron Did Swim", located at Willow Park. The sculptor Joe Barrington made the stainless steel Alligator Gar recently and together with the base is 24' tall.

Samantha, very well taken as well as a precious moment in time with your Mom. The Trinity River is renowned for its gar and it attracts sportsman from the world over.

A local high school teacher here caught one that set the gar archery fishing record at 315-lbs. We have several species of gar here however none can compete with "Everything is bigger in Texas!"

Well I don't think I'll be getting in the trinity. Thanks for commenting
