Slot canyons are amazing, but can be quite dangerous due to flash floods.

In 1997 twelve people were swept away by a flash flood in Antelope Canyon caused by a rainstorm 15 miles away...not a drop of rain actually fell in the canyon. 11 of the 12 died, the only survivor was the tour guide. 8 of the 11 who perished were tourists from France.

Over the past 20 years 68 people perished in flash floods in Arizona, including 3 and 7 year old girls at another slot canyon.

After the Antelope Canyon disaster measures were put in place such as handholds and other things for hikers to grab.
Slot canyons are amazing, but can be quite dangero... (show quote)

The first one I heard of was one in 1961.

Thanks for sharing, Alan. I have photographed Shafer from above several times, but never went down.

Thanks, UTMike. Like I said in the OP I've wanted to do this for years.

Amazing. It is hard to imagine building a road like that! Driving it must be an experience, too.

It's not hard to drive unless you meet someone. If the person in the other vehicle is new to this kind of thing it can get kinda tense.

Still dirt also?

Yup, and far rougher with little maintenance. I drove some 50 miles one time in 4wd low range. The Alpine Loop roads are narrower. I have driven on them several times and I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of full-size pickups like I was driving.

Cool.

The reason I ask is because where I live, most of our back roads are all kinds of curvy and have sharp turns.
They used to be old Colonial wagon trails that had so much use they became the roads of today. Many still just being two cars wide.

The Alpine Loop in Colorado was made for mining wagons in the 1800s and early 1900's, but these are relatively new.

WOW!

Are those old wagon trails?

Wow, indeed! Thank you, Longshadow. The roads date back to the 50s. They were for uranium mining and for seismic work in the 50s.
