Beautiful! I took many of the same. Each scene seems to be more beautiful than the previous.
I would wait until after the first of the year and send it in for a checkup. Just tell them that it doesn't seem to be focusing properly.

Having a D810 (I have the D800) it seems strange to want to gerryrig a cable release. I have the MC-30A ($64.95 at B and H, no shipping cost) and it has a larger dial to screw in or out and it works like a charm.

Gray market can be a real problem with Nikon USA repair in NY or LA. It frequently requires unauthorized repair service, or if authorized, not covered by warranty.
