Thanks for your help.

Might be sharp shinned. I had one in my yard yesterday that I need to post.

I'm quite a way north of you.

I agree that it is probably a Sharp-shinned or Coopers. Sharp-shinned are about 11 inches in height and Coopers are about 16 inches. Too bad there in nothing in the picture for scale. I used to live in your area. (Hereford). Great birding, and a wonderful place to live.

In looking at my Audubon books, it could very well be a Sharp-shinged Hawk. Right coloring, white eyebrows, banded tail, etc. Check with some of your local birders. Very fine photo!
Chuck.

I can't really add anything to the identity question but I very much enjoyed the shot!

From the shape of the head it is a Sharp-shinned Hawk.

Thanks everyone for helping me to identify this hawk. I went to Tucson for the day but when I got back I looked up sharp-shinned hawk on the Internet and I concur with your identification. Appreciate all the input.

This one was in the neighbor's yard munching down on a pigeon. Mostly what I see are Red Tail Hawks.

I think Sharp-shinned is correct. Take a look at this site for comparison to Cooper's:

If I am not mistaken, sharp shinned, and cooper's are virtually identical, except for size. The male smaller in both species, can overlap the female sharpshinned. Coopers the larger of the 2.
In either case, darn nice shot.
