I do not have health insurance. I was formerly a doctor so I am "connected" in acquiring what I need for some minor health issues. However, it would be nice to have full coverage "just in case". Previously, I had paid for my own insurance and it did cost a lot. I think the fact that they offer robust plan options is worth a lot in terms of compensation.
Given that the cheapest health insurance for an older adult (don't know how old you are) will run about $1000 per month, that is worth about $5 per hour worth of "pay".
Can you get along without insurance? Certainly - you can find basic health care "fairly" cheaply unless you end up in the ER, where you will have to pay them whatever they want to charge (which in many cases will be 6 to 10 times what they accept from Medicare and private insurance companies). I have dealt with patients who were a year shy of Medicare and sadly decided not to have health insurance. One such patient I diagnosed with lung cancer. It was very difficult to find good care for her - no one wanted to take her on as a patient, and they had to take a second mortgage on their house to pay for her care. This patient didn't make it, and her husband, who at one time was retired, ended up working into his 70's at Walmart just to make payments on his mortgage.
