external storage hard drives. How many of us "amaturs" use them, and would you do it again?

Marc: I recommend for your consideration and others reading/responding to your post the following:

Hard drives sold as external hard drives come in their own outside shell and dedicated power supply and USB cable. Suppose you have one of these and you eventually fill it. Normal next step would be to buy another one, but now you have two boxes sitting on your desk, each requiring a USB cable connection and power supply. You can see where I'm going with this: how much desk real estate can you afford and how many cables/power cords will you tolerate?

Enter the hard drive docking station (or simply hard drive dock). Using this device, you only have the one item sitting on your desk and only one USB and one power cord to contend with. Then you buy an INTERNAL hard drive of any size you wish, or available, and simply snap in to the dock. Then you can have as many hard drives as you want. Just plug in the one you want to use. The other nice feature of this method of external storage is that internal hard drives are much cheaper than the external drives. They snap in and snap out with the push of a button. I own one with a single slot, but have seen ones with two and three dock slots.

Prices on docks have a wide spread - $29.95 to over $100.00. Mine cost $79.95 and included firewire, USB 3.0, eSata Drive. You can get an idea on eBay by searching "hard drive dock".

Whoops!! I have only one drive for my dock; gotta go get a backup drive :)

I just got my new 7100D and I can tell already that I don't
like the Nikon bag that came with the kit.
I want a bag that has more pockets and places to put things like extra SD cards and "stuff". I would also like to stay under $100
I kind of like the looks of the Ape case pro bags, any opinions on them?
I would like to here what you like.

Thanks
Lee

Lee, I'm sure you will get loads of suggestions on here. However, it would help us if you could give an idea just how you plan on using a bag - such as hiking, jumping off a tour bus, airline carry-on, number of lenses, future expandability, etc. Also a warning: there is no such thing as one bag does it all. At last count, I had 10 camera bags and still feel like there are times when I could use another one for a specific purpose. Regardless of final selection, I recommend
a bag that is water repellent. Good Luck.

ED: Did you mean D7100?

If my wife changes the radio station i have to stop the car or leave it off, I could not see myself ever wanting a car with a touch screen.

AND, those traditional knobs and buttons rarely needed cleaning. With touch screens you need to use a window cleaner often, or you will have difficulty seeing the touch spots.
Or maybe there ought to be a specially designed finger tip cleaner dip

I have the opportunity to buy a Canon 20d body used in great condition, battery grip and 2 batteries for $150.00 should I do it It will be back up camera.

Last summer I upgraded to a Canon 6d, but kept my 20d which is my first DSLR. Don't know if I will ever need it as a backup, but I got a Canon adapter for a Tamron 70-210mm Adaptall left over from film days. I don't know what the shutter count is, but I doubt it's much over 3k. Just can't let go of it. Looks brand new and still takes decent images. I took it on vacation in 2012 and got what I thought were excellent pics. My wife's newer Canon point n shoot Digital Elph (12 mp) still can't match the 8 mp 20d. If the one you are contemplating buying has a low shutter count and does not look like it spent time in the back of a pickup, it could do well as a backup.

When one or several people group together, hold a camera at arms length and take a shot of themselves. Been around a long time but made popular because most everybody has a camera of some type and some place to display them, such as Facebook. You do know what Facebook is, right? :)

Yes, and I avoid it like the plague. I know what a self portrait or photo is, just had not heard this particular terminology.

Those are great shots! As a geologist I want to see everything about the volcanoes I can and we are planning at least one day down in that part of the island. Staying on the Kona coast, so it is a long drive there. Not sure I can talk my wife into the helicopter ride. For a photographer the best is a doors off flight. Other forum members have recommended the small plane. Will look into it also

Hi Steve, being a geologist you may already know that the Hawai'ian Islands were basically formed by one volcanic fissure that is still active. As the islands formed they moved northwestward, making room for new islands - I think that's called tectonic plate movement or something close. I spent 3 weeks in Hawaii in '06 and made it a point to learn about the islands' geology/geography (my undergraduate major was geography). According to info on the U of Hawai'i and US Geological Survey websites, the Hawai'ian Islands are moving in a north westerly direction at about 3" per year. I do recommend visiting soon before they end up in Kamchatka

Sorry, but I think it's BS that "everyone gets a trophy." We have raised an entire generation of kids who think just because they show up they deserve a prize. The only way to really build self-esteem is through accomplishment. Praising a child for being great is totally different from praising what a child for something they did. A room full of participation trophies is a meaningless act that accomplishes nothing positive, in my opinion.

Yea, I agree with you on this. This permeates our society on all levels, such as grade creep, etc. When hearing parents discussing how their children were doing in school, NEVER have I ever heard a parent say my son/daughter is "average" or "just getting by". They're all getting "As" and "Bs". Everybody is outstanding, rocket scientists

That was a long read for me on a computer screen, but it was absolutely fascinating. It would be equally fascinating to learn more of what happened and why there is electricity left on for no apparent reason.

For that price, I would want it to brew my coffee, make french fries, operate ATMs, and control household lighting and security, to name a few. Oh, and take professional quality pics without any effort from me :D
